OedipusRex is a noble king of Thebes, but heis stubbornly blind to the truth about himself. Heunknowingly killed his biological father King Laius, and proceeded to marry Jocasta, his biological mother.

Jocasta (Iocasta) is Oedipus’s wife, but she doesn’t know she is his mother. Jocasta solves the riddle of Oedipus’s identity before Oedipus does, but she tries to protect him from the truth.

Kreon is Jocasta’s brother andOedipus’s brother-in-law.Kreon claims to have no desire for kingship, yet he seems eager to grasp power at the end of that play.

Teiresias:the blind soothsayer of Thebes. Teiresiastells Oedipus that he is the murderer of King Laius, but Oedipus does not believe him.

The chorus (strophe and antistrophe) reactto the events onstage. The Chorus’s reactions can be lessons in how the audience should interpret what it is seeing.

Choragos: the head of the chorus

Antigone and Ismene: Oedipus’ daughters and also his sisters.

Messenger from Corinth comes to tell Oedipus about the death of Polybus, Oedipus’ adoptive father.
