Objective: I Will Be Able to Add Integers Using Models

Lesson Plans- Honors Math

Fall 2017

DATE: 8/28 – 9/1

Monday

Objective: I will be able to add integers using models.

Activity:

  • Update Google calendar
  • Jobs for the week
  • Adding integers with models ppt
  • Adding integers with 2-color counters
  • Which color represents a negative and which color represents a positive?
  • What happens if I owe a dollar and I pay it back?
  • Math Football
  • Where do you see integers in sports?
  • Which number cube did you want to show the greater value? Explain your reasoning.
  • Did you ever find yourself back at the same position you ended on your previous turn? Describe the values shown on the cubes that would cause this to happen.
  • Adding integers with number lines
  • Describe the graphical representation of the first term. Where does it start and in which direction does it move? Why?
  • What is the absolute value of the first term in each example?
  • Why did the graphical representation for the second term both start at the endpoints of the first terms but then continue in opposite directions? Explain your reasoning.
  • What are the absolute values of the second term?
  • What patterns do you notice?

Closing Product: We will construct and solve at least 6 out of 8 number lines correctly.

Homework: Integers w.s. due Thursday

Materials Needed: butcher paper, 2-color counters, adding integers handout for students, textbook, red & yellow colors, football math game board, red and white dice, player pieces

Tuesday

Objective: I will be able to add integers without models.

Activity:

  • Warm-Up: Additive Inverse
  • Adding integers practice- the students will be drawing cards to create expressions and solve those expressions mentally (competitive option: whichever student says the sum to the expression the fastest wins both cards)
  • Independent Practice

Closing Product: We will get at least 14 out of 20 questions correct on the independent practice.

Homework: Integers w.s. due Thursday

Materials Needed: number cards

Wednesday

Objective: I will be able to subtract integers using a number line.

Activity:

  • Warm-Up: Double Bubble Map where students compare their hobbies and interests to that of their neighbor.
  • Subtracting Integers with Number Lines- students model how to subtract integers using the number lines provided
  • What patterns do you notice?
  • Subtracting Integers Matching Activity- students match up the algorithm to the corresponding number line model

Closing Product: We will be able to write and solve a word problem for the expression -4 – 10 for the ticket out.

Homework: Integers w.s. due Thursday

Materials Needed: subtracting integers with number lines hand out, matching activity, index cards

Thursday

Objective: I will be able to subtract integers without models.

Activity:

  • Warm-Up: Double Bubble Map comparing integers and rational numbers
  • Go over Integers w.s. (homework for the week)
  • Complete Properties of Operations Chart with identity property, commutative, inverse, and associative for addition.
  • Game- students practice subtracting integers using the following website
  • Subtraction Bingo- students work out subtraction expressions without using models.

Closing Product: We will be able to get a score of 30 or higher on the fruit shoot game.

Homework: none

Materials Needed: butcher paper, chrome books, sign up for computer lab

Friday

Objective: I will be able to add and subtract integers without using models.

Activity:

  • Warm-Up: Multiplication Race
  • White Board Practice and ppt- student practice both addition and subtraction problems involving integers as a whole group
  • Integer Roll game- students roll a colored or white dice to get their integer. Then they decide if they are going to add or subtract. When they receive a number that is on the game board they cover up that square. The first person with 5 in a row is the winner.

Closing Product: We will be able to solve 4 out 5 problems correctly.

Homework: Skill Sheet #2 due Thursday, Sept. 7

Materials Needed: dice, game boards, integer roll game sheet, dry erase boards, expos
