NORTH STREET – SAFETY MEASURES

Consultation Responses

Public consultation for the above scheme took place between 23 July and 20 August 2012.

Details of the scheme were shown on drawing numbers T301-299/02.

Eighteen responses were received followingthe online consultation and letter drop. Six respondents were not in favour of the proposals. Twelve were in favour of the proposed scheme, two asked if fewer tables would be sufficient, four requested that an additional table should be located at the Crown and Horseshoe Public House. The responses were from residents of North Street and adjoining roads. A number of the responses raised points that require an answer and are summarised below:

COMMENTS;Speed Tables / 20mph zone

  • Could the council install a table in Cloverlea Road, this road is used as a rat run.

Response: A pair of 20mph speed roundels is proposed to remind drivers that they are still within the 20mph zone.

  • The tables should be full width to prevent drivers/motorcyclists positioning themselves to reduce their impact on vehicle speed.

Response: The proposed speed tables are to be full width and therefore all drivers will need to reduce their speed.

  • Opposed to the scheme because of damage to car suspension and the dangers of riding over them on a motorcycle.

Response: The proposed tables will be constructed in accordance with Department for transport requirements, tests have indicated that if vehicles travel over these devices at reasonable speed, no damage is caused to those vehicles. The tables have been designed to balance the requirement for speed reduction and comfort for passengers.

  • An additional table is required at the Crown and Horseshoe public house.

Response: A table is to be proposed for this location.

  • Not in favour of the 20mph zone extending into the adjoining roads.

Response: The roads adjoining North Street are constructed in a manner to reduce vehicle speeds and therefore are suitable for inclusion within the proposed safety scheme. It would not be acceptable to leave these roads out of the proposals and suggest that vehicles may travel at a higher speed than those vehicles using North Street.

  • Seven tables are too many for the length of North Street. Only one required either side of the school entrances with the existing school signs and flashing lights.

Response: The regulations regarding 20mph zones require that traffic calming features are spaced at no more than 100 metres apart, the scheme has been designed in accordance with these requirements.
