New York Wines Discover Gold in California

Ontario, CA –The 22nd Annual Jerry D. Mead’s New World International Wine Competition took place in Ontario in early March. This year over 1,100 wines were judged from all across the globe including France, Italy, Argentina, Chile, Spain, Canada and the United States.

Once again the competition lived up to its founding intention, that is to let wine consumers know that good wine, even great wine, can be purchased without necessarily spending a lot of money.

Top honors, the New World International Wine Competition Grand Champion was won by New York Chateau LaFayette Reneau Winery’s Dry Riesling. This 2010 estate bottled vintage also received the Best White Wine of the Show, Best of the Riesling Varietal, Best of Price Class and Double Gold. Chateau LaFayette Reneau sells this wine for a very reasonable $14.95.

Other top honors were; Best Red Wine – Fenestra 2007 Meritage, Livermore Valley, Conjugation, California; Best Sparkling Wine – Chateau Frank 2006 Blanc de Noirs, Finger Lakes, New York; and Best Dessert Wine – Galleano Winery Sherry, Rose of Peru, California. The Best New World Cabernet was Peirano Estate Vineyards 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, Heritage Collection, California; Best New World Chardonnay was Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards 2010 Chardonnay, Finger Lakes, New York; Best New World Merlot was Snapping Turtle 2010 Merlot, California; Best New World Pinot Noir was Sean Minor Wines 2010 Pinot Noir, Carneros, California; Best New World Port was Daniel Gehrs 2009 Fireside Port, Amador County, California, Best New World Sauvignon Blanc was Boro Hills 2011 Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand; Best New World Syrah/Shiraz was Barefoot Cellars non vintage Syrah, California; and Best New World Zinfandel was Redwood Creek 2010 Zinfandel, California. All of the wines listed above sell anywhere from $6.99 to $29.99.

NWIWC hosts the annual Wine Extravaganza and Gold Medal Showcase each year where the award winning wines are served to the public. At the event, the wineries receive their trophies and medals. The competition was the first to judge wine in price categories with the intent of being consumer based. Good wine is all around us, but with the help of NWIWC, it is easy for the consumer to learn what wines win awards in the various price classes, enabling them to purchase a good wine in their price range. This year’s Extravaganza will take place on Sunday, May 6th, from 4 – 7 p.m.at the Hilton Ontario Airport. The benefitting organization is Pomona Valley Habitat for Humanity. For more information or to purchase tickets for the event, please call the Habitat office at 909-596-7098.
