Come and learn more about the Langlois Fellowship for Study Abroad in

Art History and the Humanities

The Sheila Langlois Memorial Fellowship for Study Abroad in Art History and the Humanities provides one or two fellowships per year of up to $10,000 for students in disciplines within the humanities, including, but not exclusive to, art, art history, history, literature, philosophy, religious studies, languages, international studies, or interdisciplinary fields. Named in honor of Sheila Langlois, an accomplished watercolorist, the scholarship preferences intensive study at the undergraduate level or research at the graduate level. Through a generous donation in 2014 from Dr. Walter Langlois, professor emeritus in French, in honor of his wife, artist Sheila Langlois, students in art history and the humanities have a new scholarship opportunity to support their intensive study around the globe.
The scholarship supports students who share Sheila’s artistic passion, and also the Langlois’ shared belief in the importance of international education. Both Walter and Shelia each spent their junior year studying in France and found the experience of being in a foreign culture to be life-changing. With this new endowment for study abroad the Langlois family brings this opportunity to students at UW. One student has already benefitted. Jordyn Patrias (pictured with Dr. Walter Langlois), a senior from Laramie majoring in art history and minoring in museum studies, was given the opportunity to study abroad in Utrecht, Netherlands for the spring 2015 semester. Jordyn notes, “I gained an appreciation for everything Dutch. One of the best parts of this international experience was doing things I had never done before in my life.” In addition to her classes at the University College Utrecht (UCU), a branch of the Universiteit Utrecht, Jordyn traveled around Europe to museums such as the Prado and Reina Sofia in Madrid and the Belvedere Museum in Vienna. She describes her remarkable spring 2015 semester as an “incredible opportunity” which she will “treasure forever”. Her time in the Netherlands helped prepare her for a career as a museum curator and future graduate studies in museum studies.

In fall 2015 the University plans to award two Langlois fellowships to support the study of students in art history and the humanities.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria:

1. Potential for significant contributions to field via international study and/or research
2. Current UW student(s) with a background in art history or humanities discipline (including art, art history, culture, history, literature, philosophy, religious studies, modern/classical languages, international studies or interdisciplinary fields)
3. Cumulative GPA of 3.25 or above
4. Completed coursework: 30 hours for undergraduates; 9 hours of directed coursework for graduates
5. Degree seeking during study abroad period.
