Question and Answers

Bin collection days for some areas across North East Derbyshire will alter from Monday 13th February 2017. In anticipation of this, the Streetscene Team will commence distributing information to affected householdsduring week commencing 6thFebruary 2017.

The changes will only affect a relatively small number of households and only residents receiving notification will see their collection day change. The changes are being made to meet new housing growth demand. .

The following Questions and Answers explain further why changes are being made:

Question / Answer
Why is the Council altering our bin collection days? / In anticipation of property growth throughout the District,it is necessary to build capacity to meet increased service demand.
The Council is therefore balancing its bin collection resource to meet changing demands for black, burgundy and green bin collections.
How will I benefit from this? / The changes will ensure collection resource is organised to meet the wider district service demand arising from new property growth, minimising any future disruptions.
Is this another savings initiative? / No, the Council needs to ensure its finite waste collection resource is targeted to meet each coloured bin’s waste levels and incorporate future housing growth.
Are there any further changes anticipated? / The changes are intended to future proof waste collection arrangements for several years; however, it is likely small local changes may be required in specific areas of the District.
Will this mean a return to weekly black bin collections? / No, the amount of waste our households recycle has increased significantly over recent years resulting in the amount of waste in black bins having reduced to 55% of what it is was 10 years ago, when households had only one wheeled (black) bin. Households now have three wheeled bins which are emptied on alternate weeks and therefore do receive a weekly collection of one or the other coloured bin. It is with huge credit to our households that we are recycling 46.2 % of our wastes – so well done.
Do these changes affect everyone? / Changes to collection days will only affect certain areas in main urban villages; and these households will receive notification ahead of the changes
Properties in rural communities, emptied by smaller vehicles will be predominantly affected and will receive information informing their future collection day.
Will putting both Burgundy and Green bins out on the same day block pavements? / There should not be a difference as residents already present green and burgundy on the same day. If bins are presented at the kerbside or rear of pavements, this shouldn’t be an issue. However, if problems do arise, the Council will advise alternative bin presentation points.
My collection week is changing, does this mean I will miss a black bin collection? / No, in order to change the collection week and ensure continuity of the alternate week collections it has been necessary to undertake a second black bin collection, so at the time of the change you will receive black bin collections on two consecutive weeks.
The Council has written to those residents affected and provided a new bin collection calendar with a letter advising the dates when this will occur.
Please retain the newly delivered calendar and dispose of the calendar which would have been delivered to you in November 2016.
If the collection weeks change and I receive an additional black collection, when do I present my burgundy bin? / To maintain the alternate week collection of burgundy\black bins, affected household’s burgundy bin willbe extendeda further week before it is emptied. . However, we will undertake an extra black bin collection. If you are unable to contain your recycled waste in the burgundy bin, you will be able to present this as side waste on the next schedule collection; alternatively, as a last resort, this could be placed in your extra black bin collection.

Households affected by new collection arrangements will receive flyers delivered week commencing 30thJanuary through to the 17th February 2017. These will inform future collection days.
