Neighborhood Design Project

Name:______Pd:_____ Due Date:______

You are an urban planner and must plan a community that has recently been destructed by severe weather. You will demonstrate your knowledge of geometric figures and line & angle relationships. Your project must include all the following requirements to receive full credit. All names chosen must be school appropriate and spelled correctly.

  1. Name of your community must be placed at the top your project and should be written boldly.
  2. Four parallel streets. Each street much must be named and clearly labeled.
  3. Two transversal streets. One should be slanted; the other should be a perpendicular transversal. Clearly name & label these roadways.

Building Locations---

  1. A gas station (quadrilateral) and a fast-food restaurant (irregular hexagon) at alternate exterior angles.
  2. A convenience store (quadrilateral) and a day-care center (quadrilateral) at adjacent angles.
  3. A coffee shop (square) and a bank (pentagon) at alternate interior angles.
  4. A fire department (quadrilateral) and a medical clinic (trapezoid) at corresponding angles.
  5. A post office (quadrilateral) and a playground/park (obtuse, scalene triangle) at vertical angles.

Landmarks should be numbered…

  1. Create a key in one of the bottom corners of your project to indicate the name of each business/establishment.Building names can be factual (eg. “Turkey Hill”, “Wendy’s”) but you are encouraged to come up with some creative names.
  2. Color should be used in some form. You can be creative, but your plan must legible. Clip art, magazine pictures, etc. are permitted. Use of graph paper is encouraged.Rulers are required!

Meets
Standard / Approaching Standard / Does Not Meet Standard / Points Earned
Infrastructure Design / Community has name, all roadways are accurately placed, named ,and labeled.
4 / 3 / The map does not feature all required parallel and transversal 1roadways. Streets are not named.
2 / 1 / Neighborhood is not named. The map does not feature most streets.
0
Location of Landmarks / The map uses appropriate positioning based on the given angle pairs for all to landmarks.
4 / 3 / The plan uses appropriate position based on the given angle pairs for fewer than 5 landmarks and/or errors are made in positioning angle pairs.
2 / 1 / The map is missing several buildings –or- majority of landmark positions are incorrectly positioned.
0
Landmark Shapes & Key / Buildings, etc. are shaped and numbered accurately. Key correctly identifies landmarks with names.
4 / 3 / More than 2 landmarks are incorrectly shaped -or incorrectly identified by the key-or- some building names are missing.
2 / 1 / More than 3 building have the wrong shape. The key is not shown.
0
Creativity & Neatness / Plan is drawn neatly, is easy to navigate, and is creatively shown using colors and straight lines.
4 / 3 / Map shows minimal creativity and is partially illegible, but can be navigated.
2 / 1 / Map is very messy, not able to be navigated with no creativity shown.
