Overview of meeting

House was built in the late 1970’s / early 80’s, is double brick and tile with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.

Mr and Mrs Makings stated that they would like a relaxed coastal feel to their family room and study nook.The room to be designed is sunken, currently has one brown face brick wall, 2 x dark brown sofas, terracotta tiles, a dark creamy colour on the walls and the windows and sliding doors are aluminium frames in Doeskin. Mrs Makings informed that she disliked the darkness of the room and wanted something brighter and fresh looking.

Mr and Mrs Makings have two boys aged 11 and 15 years of age and advised that the family room is used by all family members to watch TV, play on the play station , family and friend gatherings and area to ‘chill out’. They have another living area which their boys retreat to when they have their own friends around but the family room is the heart of the home next to kitchen.

Flooring: Mr and Mrs Makings stated that they cannot afford to change the flooring as this would also require all living areas and kitchen to be replaced and this was not within their budget. Therefore, terracotta tiles are to remain.

Walls : Mr and Mrs Makings looked through paint colour decks and various paint brochures and chose Sherwin Williams : Olympus White as a feature wall and Sherwin Williams Alabaster on the remaining walls. These colours reminded her of a coastal feel which she wants to relay into the family room and study nook. Mrs Makings made it clear that she did not want any dark brown colours or furniture in the room.

We discussed the one face brick half height wall (1200mm h x 4000 w )separating the family room from the kitchen and Mr and Mrs Makings advised that they would like this covered. We explored solid wall plaster, gyprock and then it was suggested that white panelling could be used to enhance the coastal feel and be a feature wall painted with Sherwin Williams :Olympus White and it was agreed upon by all parties.

Windows and Treatments: Windows and sliding doors are to remain as is. (1 x large window is east facing and sliding door is south facing. Mr and Mrs Makings advised that they enjoy having maximum light and sun in the room and when discussing furniture placement, Mr Makings highlighted that he enjoys relaxing and looking out the window to the garden whilst also being able to watch TV. Both advised that they did not want the windows obstructed by window treatments and agreed that roller blinds would be most suitable. However, both only wanted a blind on the eastern window and not sliding door.

Furniture and soft furnishings:Mr and Mrs Makings advised that whilst the room is used to mainly watch TV, they also wanted the furniture placement to enhance conversation and socialising. Current furniture is not to scale, bulky and ‘theatre room’ like which does not encourage dialogue. Mr and Mrs Making also informed that whilst their sons like to be with them in the family room, they do not like to sit directly next to each other and enjoy their own personal space. We discussed possible options of furniture types (sofas, modular, armchairs) various combinations of furniture as well as placement options within the room. Mr and Mrs Makings decided that two armchairs and a two seater sofa would be best. However, Mr Makings highlighted that he wanted 1 armchair to face the TV and also be able to look out the window. A solution was found by placing one armchair on an angle in the corner by the window but also face the TV.

Furniture placement was also considered important to define the family room from the study nook.

Mrs Makings stated that she would like a light to mid grey sofa and the two armchairs to be a different fabric to the sofa.

We discussed general colours of soft furnishings, fabrics, rugs, home decoretc and Mrs Makings stated that she likes soft blues, greens, yellows, light greys and creams. As well as light wood for table lamps and floor lamps. Mr and Mrs Makings browsed through home magazines and identified that they like a white and wood combination of furniture which led us to the TV unit they already have.

TV / Entertainment unit : is a mid-brown colour, is in excellent condition and in keeping with the proposed scheme. Therefore it was discussed that to keep within the budget, the two doors at the front could be painted an off white colour using Annie Sloan chalk paints. Examples of this furniture paint were shown to Mrs Makings and she agreed that this would be cost effective and a way of saving to allow for spending money in other areas.

Art work was also discussed and Mr and Mrs Makings advised that they like anything coastal, related to water, the ocean or the beach.

Electrical wiring : TV antenna to be moved given the rearrangement of furniture placement, the chosen wall for the new location of the antenna and power points is a double cavity wall so no chasing is required but a qualified electrician will be required to move the antenna, and create a quad outlet GPO for the TV, play station , DVD player etc.

Lighting : Mr and Mrs Makings have existing down lights and feel that this provides enough lighting , however, would like to make the room cosy by the use of floor and table lamps.

Study Nook : When discussing the study nook, they advised that they wanted this area to be kept minimal. Mr and Mrs Makings would like to continue the relaxed coastal theme and added that they require a desk, a small filing cabinet and shelving in the alcove. The internet, wifi and power points are already in place but they wanted it to be functional and less cluttered given it is in an open plan living area.
