MT4 TRADING PLATFORM CHART TIPS

COPYING INDICATORS – TEMPLATES - PROFILES:

Right click on your start button and then left click on “Explore”. Then find your +Program File and left click on the plus sign to open it up. From there, go down until you find the +ODL FX Trader 4 and left click on the plus sign to open the folder. Then locate the +Expert folder and left click on the plus sign to open it up and then locate the Indicators folder and left click on it open it up on the right side of the screen. Once you have done this, either minimize the screen or drag it to the bottom…you are now ready to start copying and pasting MT4 indicators. Now, locate the indicator(s) that you want to copy and right click on them and then left click the “Copy” button. Once you’ve done this, pull up the Indicator Folder that you had minimized and place your cursor in an open area within the screen and right click to open up the “paste button” and left click on it. If you want to copy/paste more than one at a time, just hold down the Ctrl key as you click the Copy button for each indicator to highlight all of them for copying and pasting. NOTE: To copy Templates and Profiles, just follow the same instructions, but open the Templates Folder to copy templates and open Profiles Folder to copy profiles.

CHART SETUP:

Open the chart of the pair that you want to setup, and then click the Candlestick button on the toolbar at the top of the screen and the zoom +button twice. This will setup candlesticks on your chart at a good size for viewing. If you want to adjust the colors or other settings, right click anywhere on the screen and then click on the Properties button at the bottom of the popup or use the F8 key. This will open up the properties screen for editing. One suggestion that I would make is to uncheck the Show Grid box, and put checks in the boxes for Show Period Separator and Show Object Description. Having the grid lines on the charts when trying to use daily pivots can get messy and confusing. Now, you are ready to start applying indicators.

APPLYING INDICATORS:

Go to the Navigator Window and open the Custom Indicators folder. Once you’ve located the indicator that you want to use, double left click on it and a popup properties screen will appear. From within this screen, you can change any of the settings such as Colors, Inputs, Levels, Line Width, etc. After you have made any changes, click on OK and the indicator will be added into a window below the main price chart…with the exception of certain indicators that are meant to be applied to the price chart itself, such as TM, Super Signals, Moving Averages, Bollinger Bands, Perky, SHI Channel, etc., just to name a few.

OVERLAYING INDICATORS:

There are times when you will want to apply several indicators in the same window, either to save on screen space or to see how different settings work together. It’s very easy to do this by just dragging and dropping the indicator. To do this, just left click on the indicator that you want to overlay and hold down the button and drag it to the window where you want it to be placed. Then, release the button and its popup properties screen will appear. Make any changes that you want to make and click OK. It will be added to the window with the other indicator. You can overlay as many indicators in the same window that you want to…until it gets to messy to view. For Example: you could overlay the RSI (9), (14), and (21) together in the same window with different colored lines, or the CCI (6), (14), and (50) in the same window. Or, overlay the RSI (21) in the same window with the I-Trend, or put the ACVOL in the same window with the LaGuerre. You can even add the RSI, etc. to the price chart itself. These are just a few examples, and the different combinations are endless. Find what works best for you.

SAVING SPECIAL CHARTS/INDICATORS AS TEMPLATES:

Once you have set up a chart with the indicators that you want, you will want to save this combination as a template to make it easier to use in the future for additional chart setups. For Example: You pull up the Gbp/Usd price chart, and click on the Candlestick button at the top of the screen and then click the Zoom + button twice. This will add the candlesticks to your price chart in a size that is good for viewing. Then, open up the Custom Indicators Folder, and double-click on the Trend Manager (or, TM with Triggers) to add this to the price chart. From there, double-click on the I-Trend and click OK, and it will be added in a window below the price chart. Then, double-click on the RSI Indicator, and when its property window comes up you change the period setting from 14 to 21 and click OK. Once you have your chart set up with the indicators that you want, right click anywhere on the price chart to open the Properties window. Then, left click on Template - “Save Template” and when a window opens up you will name it and click on save, i.e. PG MAT, etc. In the future, if you want to use this setup with any other pair, all you have to do is to open up the price chart and right click on it to open up the Properties window and then click on Template – Load Template and then click on the name of the template that you want to open and it will be automatically added to that currency pair without having to go through the whole setup again and again. NOTE: If you want to make changes to a saved template, just make the changes and click on Template - Save Template and save it with the same name and the changes will be made permanent. If you want to make some changes, but don’t want to overwrite the current saved template, just save it under a different file name. This will save you a lot of time and effort. You can save as many Templates as you want.

SAVING CHARTS AS PROFILES:

Now, once you have your templates made, you will want to create some chart profiles that will make it much easier to view and analyze multiple pairs and/or time frames without jumping from one chart to another. For Example: Go to the profiles folder and open up the “Default” folder. It should be empty, but if it’s not delete whatever you find. Then, let’s say you want to create a profile of the Major Pairs with the PG MAT template. You will click on the New Charts button, and left click on each of the four majors in turn….GbpUsd, EurUsd, UsdChf, and UsdJpy. Once you have opened these four charts, you will click on the Windows button at the top of the platform, and click the “Tile Vertically” button which will align the four charts within the screen. From there, you will right click anywhere on one of the charts which will produce a popup window. You will then put your mouse cursor on “Template” and another popup window will appear with a list of the available templates to choose from. Just left click on the template that you would like to add to the chart. Once you have added the template to all four charts you will then left click on the “Default” profile at the bottom of the platform, or go to the Profiles Folder in the upper tool bar, which will cause the Profiles Folder popup to appear. Then, click on the “Save Profile As” button; another popup will open where you will name it and click OK to finish. There is no limit as to the number of charts that can be added to any one profile, or any combination of templates, separate indicators, etc.
