COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students will create 2-d and 3-d work by learning basic principles of art and design. Students will learn basic to advanced techniques in a variety of media, including but not limited to: pencil, charcoal, pastel, three dimensional, digital media, watercolor and gouache paints. Recognizing artistic elements in everyday life is an essential skill for the 21st century learner. In order to practice this effectively, some supplies will need to be purchased for continued practice at home. You will bring them to art class everyday. Leaving them “in your locker” or “at home” means you are unprepared for class. You are responsible to have the following supplies with you whenever you enter the art room:

-A wooden pencil

-A handheld sharpener

-A white eraser

-An organized ART section to your binder*

BINDER: Your organized binder is an important part of life at MACS. If your binder is unorganized, you have to clean it.You cannot operate at your “best” if you don’t have an organized binder. Binders will be graded in all of your classes for organization, content, and completion. This class is no different. You will receive a grade randomly for your binder about every 2-3 weeks of class. This grade is based on:

-Organization Are your ART section materials separate from your other classes? It should be.

-Content (Notes) Are your notes written on clean, lined paper? Are your notes in chronological order by date? Are they neatly written and understandable?

-Content (Handouts) Do you have all handouts that you are required to keep? Are they in order and neat or are your handouts ripped and destroyed? If you are missing/destroyed a handout, did you get it replaced?This syllabus is the first handout you will keep in your binder for the whole year!If you need help with organization, please don’t hesitate to ask me.

GRADING: Because Art is a studio-based class, almost all of the grading will be focused on what you do IN class. This class is a “project based class.” That means that we will always be working on projects in class, for as long I think is necessary to complete the work.

As your teacher, I will set a reasonable due date for my classes’ projects. If you are absent, sick, or miss school for whatever reason, you are still expected to meet that due date. If you need to stay after school to finish a project, talk to me about what days I am available. It is not my responsibility to stay afterschool so you can finish your project on time, however, since enough time has been given in class for your projects’ completion. For special circumstances, parents may email me. See a breakdown of your art class average in the graph above.

Consequences for Rule Breaking: First offences will receive a verbal warning in class. This may be followed by a quick after-class discussion. I may also call home. If a problem persists, you will receive an Administrative Detention (A.D. / Pink Slip). This means I will be calling home again, too! If the problem is still not getting resolved, severe actions including office referrals, and disciplinary meetings with the Dean will take place. If you are asked to leave class because you are disrupting learning, you will have an automatic parent meeting with myself and the dean (MACS policy.)

Consequences for being AWESOME:Wonderful students are students who come to class prepared, have a great attitude, and are ready to work! Since we will be doing a variety of art projects this year, it is important to recognize that not every project is going to be your favorite project. However, that doesn’t mean it isn’t your classmates’ favorite project. It is important to remember that Art is subjective and to remain supportive and respectful of your fellow classmates. I will not tolerate people disrespecting others’ art or the projects that I assign.

ART CLASS RULES:

1) DEMONSTRATE RESPECT

In this school and classroom we will respect all staff, students, and guests. We will respect our school building by cleaning up after ourselves. We will respect ourselves by not making negative comments about our artwork or others’ artwork or the assignment we are completing. This rule applies to your everyday life…

As your teacher I promise to always respect you, your artwork, and our classroom and I expect the same in return.

2) BE PREPARED

Homework is to be completed at home and turned into class in the period it is due. Late assignments will not be accepted under any circumstances other than legitimate absences from school. If you are absent, simply hand in your homework the next day you are at school. If you do not bring it in the next school day you are present, it will be considered late and therefore will not be accepted.

In addition to homework, you are responsible for having several art supplies with you every day. This includes a wooden pencil, an eraser, and a handheld sharpener. These items should be kept at all times in your pencil case inside your binder. If you forget these items points will be deducted from your classroom participation, which will affect your GPA.

3) FOLLOW DIRECTIONS

As your teacher I will give directions daily. I will hold my classes to certain expectations. As a part of our respectful relationship, you will follow the directions the first time they are given. Consequences will result if you fail to follow our classes’ simple directions.

Conversely, students who follow directions consistently with a good attitude may receive a rewarding positive phone call home! You want to be this student!

If any information that you provide below changes, please notify me at . My contact information is on this syllabus which will be kept in your child’s binder at all times. There are jobs available in the arts! To get into an art college,high school students must submit a drawing portfolio of specific types of drawings. This portfolio is submitted as part of the Art College Application Process.I would need to help them complete this requirement to apply for art school.Your son/daughter should talk to me if they are “not sure yet!”

Students should have these supplies by Friday, September 11

and will have a notebook and supply check in class on that day, for which they will receive their first grade.
