Course Outcomes:

Honors coursesare designed for students who require preparation for the objectives and expectations of the essential curriculum, both in terms of content knowledge and application. Coursework includes an emphasis on abstract material and requires extensive independent work, self-discipline, and commitment to meet the expectations and timelines. Successful completion of Honors coursework will prepare students for collegiate level mathematics. The content of this course includes, but is not limited to the following: lines, circles, ellipses, functions (linear, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric), right triangles, sequences, series, and limits. Pre-requisites: Successful completion of Honors Algebra 2 or Advanced Algebra.

Classroom Expectations:Please…

  • show respect for everyone (even when your inclination is otherwise).
  • come to class prepared with your homework completed, brain engaged, and ready to participate.
  • keep your attire and conversational habits appropriate for school to avoid distractions.
  • turn off your cell phone & mp3-player upon entering class. An emergency message can be sent via the office at (240)236-6400. (Please see cell phone policy below).
  • refrain from bringing any food or drinks to class. Your lunch is in the cafeteria, not Rm.A133.
  • conduct yourself with academic integrity at all times. If you feel the need to “cheat”, talk to me.
  • USE YOUR BRAIN!

Grading Policy:

  • All grades are given at the teacher’s discretion. Grades will be calculated based on points for each category, listed below, which will be a certain percentage of the total grade.
  • Grading is done on a weighted grade basis.

100%-90% = A; 89%-80% = B; 79-70% = C; 69-60% = D; Below 60% = F

8% - Classwork/Participationwhich includes the following:

-Students will be expected to participate constructively in class and complete classwork assignments. This includes working collaboratively with others on specific assignments, having appropriate “on-task” behavior, positive participation, and giving effort to the class and the class.

7% - Homework will be given every night. Assignments will be checked for completion and accuracy. Show all work! Answers only do not count as attempted/completed problems! Late homework will not be accepted for points!

30% - Quizzes will be given at irregular intervals throughout the chapter, both announced and unannounced.

55% - Tests will be given at the end of each Unit. Unit Review work will be provided for each unit, and may or may not be counted for a grade. There will also be a cumulative test given each term.

Semester Grade: 50% Term Grade (x2 Terms). Each Term Grade is based on letter grade points (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0).

If a grade of “Z” appears in the grade book, it signifies “zero” points for an assignment. Any assignments with a “Z” can still be made up, but not always for full credit.

If a grade of “E” appears in the grade book, it signifies the assignment is “excused” for the student. This assignment will not need to be made up.

Per FCPS Regulation 500-05 (Grading – Secondary)

3. Exceptions to the Grade Computations

  1. A student who fails the second term of a one (1) credit semester course due to lack of acceptable effort may be failed for the course regardless of total quality points earned. Failure for lack of an acceptable effort shall be approved by the principal and shall be preceded by ample notification of the parent/guardian.

A student who fails the third and/or fourth terms of a one (1) credit semester course because of lack of acceptable effort may be failed for the year regardless of total quality points earned. Failure for lack of acceptable effort shall be approved by the principal and shall be preceded by ample notification of the parent/guardian.

Retake Policy:

You may retake one (1) unit test per term. It will not be the same exact test as the original. Grades will be calculated by finding the mean of the original and retake scores. Students may not retake quizzes or cumulative tests.

Homework Policy:

Homework reinforces skills taught in class while giving students a level of responsibility. ALL WORK SHOULD BE SHOWN and honest attempts should be made to achieve credit. Because we will usually correct and review homework problems in class the day they are due, LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL RECEIVE ZERO POINTS.

Absentee Policy:

Excused Absences
It is the sole responsibility of the student to arrange make-up work for excused absences within two school days of the absence. The teacher will determine an appropriate time frame for the student to complete the make-up work. Failure to complete this work within this time frame will result in zeros as grades for these assignments.

Unexcused Absences

As stated in Frederick County Public School's Regulation 500-25, "students have the right to make up class work missed and to have this work reviewed and evaluated by the teacher. Credit will not be given toward a grade for this work. Students have the responsibility to request make-up work within two (2) days of their return to school."

Cell Phone/MP3 Policy:

Cell phones and other electronic devices should be off and away during class time. There will be times in class when they are permitted, but only when Mrs. Fisher gives her consent.

Materials:

Pencils, Graphing Calculator (TI 83 Plus or TI 84), TEXTBOOKS, paper.

**Please note that ANY work completed in pen is subject to a deduction of points!!

Textbooks: Pre-Calculus: With Limits,Larson 2nd Edition

Textbooks are the responsibility of the student. Once provided to a student, they are NOT the responsibility of the school or teacher. The replacement cost of the textbook is $90.00, for any damages or loss of a book.

HAC

All high schools now have an online student grade viewer accessible through the internet. Once you receive student ID codes and passwords, all grades for every class can be viewed online from home. This is an important tool for you and your parent/guardian to keep track of all your assignment and course grades. Please see your guidance counselor for more information.

Cheating

Students at TuscaroraHigh School are expected to be academically honest. Cheating will not be tolerated. If there is evidence that cheating has occurred, a grade of “0” will be given on the assignment/test/quiz. Parents/guardians will be notified and a referral will be given to the office.

Tutoring

Tutoring is available by appointment. Please request tutoring from Mrs. Fisher with at least one day’s notice. Scheduling an appointment is your best option. Tutoring is for students who come to class prepared and stay on task. Tutoring is not for students who do not pay attention in class, who do not come prepared for class, or who do not do their homework.

FLEX

The purpose of FLEX is to work on school related activities for 40 minutes. All school rules and expectations apply during FLEX. Students are expected to be on time, to be respectful, to work with all teachers cooperatively, to attend tutoring when requested, and to use the provided time in a productive manner. FLEX is not a free-block; no listening to music, playing cards, sleeping, etc.

Students are strongly encouraged to make effective use of this valuable time. It is imperative that you seek help from Mrs. Fisher as soon as you encounter difficulty in the course. Students are also invited to form study groups and peer pairs for studying purposes. You may sign up for FLEX by the end of third block. Remember that there are priority days, so I may not be able to pull you the day you want – don’t wait – sign up as soon as possible!

I will expect your very best effort all semester! I am here to help you succeed! Please contact me for any questions or concerns by phone (240-236-6400) or e-mail (). If you ever have any questions or concerns about anything going on in Mrs. Fisher’s classroom, please do not hesitate to email so the matter may be discussed.
