Task 1: Describe techniques for moving equipment and people

You will be asked how to move equipment that you use in your work and how you reduce the risk of discomfort, pain and injury (DPI) when moving equipment.

You will also be asked to describe techniques to support a person to move. You need to show how these techniques keep the person comfortable, maintain the person’s dignity and reduce the risk of discomfort, pain and injury.

To answer these questions, you need to know about the factors that contribute to discomfort, pain and injury outlined in the DPI framework— Moving and handling people: The New Zealand Guidelines 2012.

  1. Describe techniques for moving equipment.

Choose four pieces of equipment from the list below. Fill in the table to describe a different technique for moving each piece of equipment and how the technique reduces the risk of discomfort, pain and injury.

Here is the list of equipment to choose from:

  • bedding (blankets, mattress or bed).
  • furniture.
  • household appliances.
  • household waste.
  • laundry.
  • moving aids (such as hoists, air-assisted lifting devices).
  • outdoor equipment.
  • personal mobility aids (such as crutches, walking frame, wheelchair, mobility scooter).
  • other equipment (write down what it is).

Try to select equipment from your own work experience and make sure your answers follow your workplace’s policies and procedures.

First piece of equipment:
How I would move it / How this technique reduces the risk of discomfort, pain and injury
Second piece of equipment:
How I would move it / How this technique reduces the risk of discomfort, pain and injury
Third piece of equipment:
How I would move it / How this technique reduces the risk of discomfort, pain and injury
Fourth piece of equipment:
How I would move it / How this technique reduces the risk of discomfort, pain and injury
  1. Describe techniques for supporting people to move.

Fill in the table below to describe four techniques to support a person to move.

Describe how each technique:

  • helps maintain the person’s dignity and comfort.
  • helps reduce the risk of discomfort, pain and injury for yourself and the person being moved.

You should include:

  • at least one technique that assists people to move using normal movement patterns.
  • at least one technique that involves the use of equipment that is specific to a person's needs.

First technique:
How this technique helps maintain the person’s dignity and comfort / How this technique reduces the risk of DPI for me and for the person being moved
