Examiners’ feedback over several seasons has clearly identified that Clubbers’ pony handling skills & theory knowledge generally do not match their riding ability. NOT a good situation. True horsemanship involves ALL ROUND capability – to be able to CARE FOR & BE KNOWLEDGABLE ABOUT your pony. This session is suitable for Clubbers who are working towards D & D+ Test and those who have gained this level – especially if you passed in 2015.

If you work confidently on the flat, over poles & small fences in the arena in walk, trot & canter and want to have a go at cross country but wonder if you are ready, this session is for you. Start with jumping warm up & progress to small rustic style obstacles. And walk the cross country course on foot to learn what’s involved when you take the next steps.

Riding in open space. Quite different from following tracks & trails. Take this step to improve your security & balance in the saddle and to develop your ability to control your pony in open environment. This session is a must do if you are thinking of entering shows this year. Remember, ponies can behave very differently in a big field full of yummy green grass!

LUNGEING BADGE
Clubbers will learn to lunge and be lunged on this badge. To gain the badge the focus will be on your ability to sit straight and in balance while on the lunge. Work in walk & trot, with/out reins & then no stirrups!!
Special note that this is also a great activity if you loan/own a pony. The art of working a pony on the lunge is not easy to acquire. The rewards include seeing your pony improve & developing your relationship with your special equine.

LOADING
D Test level & above
Learn to load & unload a pony, with assistance, safely into and out of a trailer/horsebox.Sounds easy when you put it like that. But not if you don’t have the necessary knowledge & skill. There are specific Health & Safety considerations when loading & unloading ponies correctly and ensuring that their experience is a positive one that gives them confidence.
You must be able to lead a pony well & your handling skills should be D level to book for this session.

Also an especially useful session for Members who would like to practice talking about Pony Club syllabus topics in preparation for test days. Prepare a short talk – maximum 10 minutes – on any Pony Club subject. You can use any props/media to help make your talk interesting & informative.
If you choose a subject like Mini Birds, your knowledge may also be enough for you to be awarded this badge together with your Public Speaking badge.
