More safety and less standstill

On the InnoTrans 2012, igus presented innovations that care for safety and reliability in rail vehicles.

Challenges for components and building parts are particularly harsh in the railway technology: they need to operate reliably during daily operation among chancing environmental conditions, they should require as little maintenance as possible and ensure a high level of safety during the transport of people and goods. To satisfy these diverse demands and standards, the polymer specialists from igus presented several tailor-made products on the InnoTrans 2012.

Cables according to the railway fire protection standard

The new igus Chainflex signal cable CFSPECIAL.414 has been developed for the use in moved energy supplies of rail vehicles. Its outer jacket material is halogen-free, flame-resistant, non-toxic and shows low smoke gas density. Safety edges of sliding doors, sliding or folding steps or adjustments for the train driver seat are typical rail vehicle applications.

In the igus laboratory, CFSPECIAL.414 was successfully tested with more 1.0 million double cycles at a bending factor of 7.5 x d , thus fulfil the fire protection requirements according to DIN 5510.

Additionally there is a wide program of control cables available to the rail vehicle builders and designers. Those that particularly stand out are the shielded and unshielded cables of the CF98/CF99 and CF9/CF10 families. Due to the application of special conductor alloys, CF98/99 cables reach a lifetime of up to 40 million cycles at very small bending radii of 4xd. The versions of the CF9/CF10 family reach a lifetime of up to 10 million cycles. Special conductor constructions made of copper allow very small bending radii of 5xd. Both cable families dispose of a flame-resistant and halogen-free TPE outer jacket.

Lubrication and maintenance-free screw drives

Screw drives are machine elements turning a rotational movement into a translational movement. The new Drylin screw drives consist of self-lubricating plastic nuts and thus allowing a lifelong operation without external lubrication. Especially in the harsh environment of the railway technology, such lubrication and maintenance-free screw drives from igus create a plus of safety: they stay dry during operation, therefore dirt can’t stick to the lubricants and cause wear. Above all, the trapezoid thread versions are suitable for the low current switching units or point machines, the range of steep threads allows failure-free operation in door drives, steps and linear driving switches.
