Dear Parents:

Safely transporting students, during the school year, requires the attention of bus drivers, students, parents and school officials. While our district’s transportation safety record is excellent, it is possible to take for granted that even minor distractions can divert a driver’s attention and put everyone on board at risk.

The bus driver is in charge of his/her bus. Students, who fail to observe the rules listed below or refuse to follow the direction of the bus driver, will be subject to disciplinary action. Depending on the circumstances, disciplinary action can range from a verbal warning to suspension of bus riding privileges. Video cameras are used on district buses, in a random rotation, to monitor activity in and around the bus while in route to or from school and/or extracurricular activities.

Riding the bus is a privilege and not a guaranteed right. Failure to follow bus rules and regulations may result in suspension of the privilege of riding the bus. Excessively dangerous behavior will result in immediate action.

1.  Pupils must be on time—the bus can not wait beyond the regular schedule for those who are tardy.

2.  Pupils should never stand in the roadway while waiting for the bus.

3.  Unnecessary conversation with the driver is prohibited.

4.  Classroom conduct is to be observed by pupils while riding the bus. Ordinary conversation is permissible.

5.  Pupils must not at any time extend arms or head out of the bus window.

6.  Pupils must not throw waste paper or other rubbish on the floor of the bus.

7.  Pupils must not try to get on or of the bus, or move about within the bus while it is in motion.

8.  Pupils must observe direction of the driver when leaving the bus.

9.  Any damage to the bus should be reported at once to the driver.

10.  Pupils shall not throw objects on or from the bus.

11.  Balloons will not be allowed on the bus.

12.  Riding the bus is a privilege and, therefore, may be removed by the superintendent of schools.

13.  The emergency doors should be used ONLY for emergency purposes.

14.  The bus driver may assign seats if deemed necessary.

Please take the time to review these rules with your child and emphasize that bus safety is everyone’s responsibility. If you have any transportation changes during the school year, contact Spalding Bus Lines at 573-735-4924 or the MCR-1 Transportation office at 573-735-4631, ext. 1113. The school bus is the direct link between home and school. With your help, we can make sure that the 2016-2017 school year remains accident free. Thank you for your time and attention.

Sincerely,

Dr. Tracy Bottoms
