DESCRIPTION

The study of history is not merely about dates and events. To study history is to understand the world and the triumphs and failures of humanity. In history one rediscovers the past, understands the present, and prepares for the future.Our course outlines the significant people and events of the western world from the 16th Century to recent times. The course provides a broad exploration of western historical themes, ideas, and concepts and challenges the history student to make connections between the events and the ideas of the past to those of the present day.

READINGS
We will be using the textbook Legacy: The West and the World. A variety of digital texts will also be used as a reference including Flow of History and Wikibooks.
Seminars and Debate readings will be taken from various sources. Readings for the Seminars will come from Primary Document sources, Books, the Internet, and Historical Journals. The main source for the Debates is Taking Sides: Western Civilizations.
GENERAL COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Active participation in class discussion and regular reading of the text and assigned readings are essential for the successful completion of this course. Students will be required to take part in seminars,debates, group presentations and performance tasks.
Students are responsible for providing evidence of their learning within established timelines, and understand that there are consequences for cheating, plagiarism, not completing work, and submitting work late.

LEARNING SKILL DEVELOPMENT
Students will be assisted in their learning development through the following methods:

MARK BREAKDOWN: ASSESSEMENT / EVALUATION Your midterm and final grades will be determined by your level of performance on a number of activities. Evidence will be collected through observations, conversations and student products (tests/exams, assignments for evaluation). The report card grade represents student achievement of overall curriculum expectations as demonstrated to that point in time with special consideration given to more recent evidence.
Each of the activities you complete in this course (including tests) will be directly tied to the following achievement areas:

Knowledge and Understanding (evaluation of your knowledge of facts and terms and understanding of concepts and theories)

Thinking/Inquiry (evaluation of your critical and creative thinking and inquiry skills)

Communication (evaluation of your ability to communicate information and ideas in a variety of ways)
