Modern Architectural Structure

Modern Architectural Structure

Modern Architectural Structure

Project Overview:

When a building is being created, there is much that goes into the process from sketches, blueprints, city permits, contracts, supply orders, etc. During this project, you will become an amateur architect. You will be the architect and will create an architectural structure inspired by a modern or post modern art movement. The movements include the following: Art Nouveau, De Stijl, Art Deco, Prairie School/Style, The Bauhaus, Mid-century Modern, Postmodernism, and Deconstructivism.

The final artwork will be an architectural structure created from cardboard that represents a modern or post modern architectural movement. During the planning process, you will create: 1. Two sketches and 2. a blueprint of the structure. On the blueprint, you will include three perspective drawings of your architectural structure. The first two drawings will be completed prior to the building of the structure and the last and largest drawing will be completed post construction. Within the blueprint you will also include a history of the art movement that your architectural structure was influenced by.

Getting Started

Step 1:

  1. Which architectural movement will you base your structure on? ______
  2. Research buildings that fall within this movement. Get ideas from the images in order to incorporate them into your building.
  3. Sketch two different building ideas in the boxes below (Include two views within each box):

Drawing 1: (Include two views of the building)
Drawing 2: (Include two views of the building)

Architectural Blueprint

Step 2:

  1. Will you use drawing 1 or drawing 2 in order to create your final architectural structure? ______
  2. Follow the template provided by the teacher to organize the blueprint. Draw the boxes that will contain the architecture drawings.
  1. Create a clean drawing of your final architectural structure. Draw two different views of the architectural structure on boxes 2 and 3 (Boxes labeled above). Draw using two-point perspective (One-point perspective optional).
  2. Write an art history report on the art movement that you chose to base your architectural structure on. Type your art history report and cleanly glue it onto box 4 (boxes are labeled above). Limit the margins of your typed paper in order to fit it in the space allowed for box 4.
  3. Within the art history report, include the following information:
  4. Name of the art movement
  5. Dates of the movement
  6. Brief history of the movement (write a short paragraph of 4-6 complete sentences). Here are some questions to help you get started: How did the movement originate? Where did the movement originate? Why did the movement originate?
  7. Characteristics of the movement. Characteristics may be written in bullet points. Use 5 or more bullet points.
  8. Create the final architectural drawing on box 1 after you have completed the architectural structure out of cardboard. This final drawing should demonstrate how the cardboard structure looked after its completion.
