Mentoring Program

Among the basic tasks of every Cadet in the Company is the recruitment and mentoring of new Cadets.

The Company often loses members because “They don’t feel included in, or as a valued member of the

Cadet Corps. This is where the “Mentoring Program” enters into the equation.

Thefact that we are trying to set a ‘new culture’ of Panther Company being the ELITE leadership

program on campus, should be leading to a greater interest among the general student population who

want to belong and are looking for a place to fit in.

The “Mentoring Program” will pair experienced Cadets withnew ones as a way to ease them into

MCJROTC.

Goal:

•Createa bond between experienced and new Cadets so they will feel more accepted into the

mainstream of the Cadet Corps.

•Develop astronger feeling that new Cadets are part of the team and that is their Cadet Corps.

•Increase the retention rate and active participation of all Cadets in the activities/operations of the Company

•Encourage and increase open communication among all of our Cadets

Objectives:

•Any Cadet that request a mentor or that is recommended by the Cadet staff will be assigned a “Mentor”.

•Once a Cadet has been assigned a mentor, that mentor should immediately assume an active role in assisting the Cadet with his/her introduction into theformal and informal operations/teams of the Program.

•If possible, the mentor and mentee should live in a relatively close proximity geographically.

•The mentor relationship should continue until wither or both Cadets feels it is no longer

needed.

•Introduce your mentee to the Command Staff, Officers, SNCO’s and as many Cadets as possible.

Foster a friendly sense of belonging.We want YOU. We’re glad you’re on board.

•Makeyourselfavailable to assist and answer any and all questions the new Cadet may have. (Encourage questions).

•Communicate with the new Cadets to remind him/her ofscheduled PT, classes, and operations.

•Encourage the new Cadets to volunteer for operations and community service events.

Involvementgenerates a sense of belonging.

Mentoring Program Goals:

1) Tofosterprofessional relationships betweenmentorsand new Cadets

2) Tostimulate exploration/inquiry into operations and team involvement

3) Toenhance the level ofprofessionalismamong Cadets

4) To provide individualized andacademic advice

Program Outline:

LE 1-2’s

During the LE 1-2 years, Cadetswill be required to attend 2 “Mentor Roundtable”discussions a semester. These sessions are designed to allow Cadets to informallydiscuss Cadet/Company issues and interact with multiple mentors.At the end of each roundtable session, attendance will be taken and Cadetparticipationis required.

Individuals attending events or programs are to behave professionally giving thediscussion leader attention and respect. Use of laptop computers or other electronicdevices during presentations is unacceptable. Excessive talking, sleeping, or any otherform of disrespect will result in removal from the setting and reporting to the Office ofProfessional Affairs.

LE 3-4s

The mentee-mentor relationshipwill be based on the best fit determined by the SMI, MI, and Command Staff. Suggested discussion topics for these mentoring sessions will be outlined forthementors, but should be guided by the Cadets needs.

Documentation of meetings withmentors will be required. This documentation will be reviewed to serve as acomponent of their educational development.

Mentor Responsibilities

Mentorswill be involved in providing informal roundtablediscussions.

Topic discussions will be provided to the mentors, however, Cadets interest and needs

should lead the roundtable discussion. Discussion stimulators may include mentor

background, experiences, and successes.

Mentors who participate in the mentoring program are expected to meetwith theirrespective mentees

twice a week. The goal is to have Cadets develop a mentorrelationship with an individual who can be a

sounding board to them and assist them indeveloping a sense of ownership into the Company.

Professionalism is expected of all Cadets during mentor discussion meetings.
