Course description:

3655. Methods and Materials in Health Education/(3). F;

This course examines the theory and practice of planning health education programs for the middle and high school levels. Students will gain experience in the NC Course of Study in Healthful Living Education, writing unit plans, and creating lesson plans. Development of instructional materials and a variety of teaching strategies are emphasized. Observation and teaching in public schools are required.

Course objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

o  Identify the serious health risks for adolescents addressed in the NC Course of Study;

o  Describe the status of health education in public schools in North Carolina;

o  List methods for determining the needs of the learner of health education and a skills approach to prevention of serious health risks;

o  Demonstrate skills in writing cognitive, psychomotor, affective, and action objectives;

o  List a variety of materials and resources available for planning and teaching health education;

o  Discuss the variety of methods appropriate for the teaching of health education, including technology;

o  Demonstrate skills in open-ended teaching strategies (role-play, cooperative learning, small group discussion);

o  Model skills in affective education and values education;

o  Demonstrate skills in writing lesson plans using the Effective Teacher Training format;

o  Implement lessons in a videotaped microteaching situation;

o  Develop evaluative materials/activities for assessment

o  Conclude that health education is a vital component of the curriculum with the potential to enhance the quality of life for school-aged youth

A = 94 to 100 C = 78 to 83.9
