Mathoor Visesham – Special Supplement

Vol.-2 No. 5May 2004 (For limited circulation)

A Great Mathoor Achievement

Members of the Mathoor family can be proud of their achievements in completing the NaveekaranaKriyakal in the family temple which was long overdue. With the rituals undertaken during the month of May, a major milestone of Punarudharana activities was completed, that of cleansing the temple and associated temple structures of all the Asudhis. A series of activities such as Devaprasnam, Vilichu Cholli Prayaschithm, Parihara Kriyakal, Aavahana Karmangal, Bhagavatha Sapthaha (Moolam) Paarayanam, Thila Havanam, Sayoojya Pooja, Ponkala Festival, Jeernodharanam (renovation) of temple building structures such as main Temple, Thidappally and Chavadi, reconstruction of Kochambalam etc. were undertaken successfully with the grace of Mathoor Bhagavathy. Liberal support of the members of the family and the great team work among the volunteers who came from Trivandrum, Kayamkulam, Cherthala and Ernakulam apart from Alleppey and Nedumudi made the task easier. The enthusiasm of the members of the family to see that this precious family heritage is preserved at any cost was the motivating factor driving the volunteers who put in considerable hard work to complete the activities on schedule. Now it is the duty of all the members of the family to protect the temple and the surroundings from all forms of Asudhis which may cause deterioration of Deva Chithanyam. According to Thantra Sastra, the next major Naveekarana activities will have to be undertaken after a 12 year period.

Report on the Punaprathishta Activities

The rituals associated with the Punaprathishta activities started on May 19th evening. The various pooja rituals scheduled on each day for the next five days were undertaken with due care and reverence. A large number of the members of the family and people living in the locality attended the rituals. As usual the Prasaada Uottu (lunch in the temple) was attended by a large number of people every day. The rituals were undertaken by a team of Thantries led by the family Thantri Brahmasree Narayanan Bhattathiri, under the able guidance of Brahmasree Puthumana Sreedharan Namboothiri of Ambalapuzha. The Mela Vadyam group from Ambalapuzha presented excellent performance particularly on the final days and made the environment highly vibrant. On the final day (May 24th) at the auspicious hour the Dravya Kalasam was poured on the Bhagavathy idol. Following activities were also undertaken simultaneously.

-Re-installation of Siva, Ganapathy and Dhannwanthari idols in the main temple.

-Re-installation of Sastavu, Gandharvan and Rektheswari in the Kochambalam.

-Installation of a new Thazhika Kudam at the top of Kochambalam.

-Re-installation of Karanavar in the re-constructed temple structure.

Sarpa Bali: In order to atone for the Doshams associated with the dilapidated Sarpa Kavu, Palpayasa Bali was undertaken in the Valiyapura. There is an urgency to undertake the renovation activities of the Sarpa Kavu in order to eliminate the anger of Sarpa Devathakal.

Kalasam Vazhipadukal: Following members sponsored various Kalasam Vazhipadukal during the rituals.

Thiruvathira Kali:Valiyapura, the centre of classical arts reverberated with song and dance after a long time when a group of 20 young girls performed Thiruvathira Kali on the evening of May 24th. These girls in the age group of 12 to 18 years wearing multi-coloured Pattu skirts and blouces with flowers in their heads, presented a riot of colours in Valiya Pura under the Nilavilakku andspot lights. The highly energetic girls were trained under the expert guidance of Ms. Seethalakshmi of Mathoor Trisala. It was a great experience for the members present in the Valiya Pura to watch this ancient Nalukettu come alive with such popular Thiruvathira songs like “YAMY YAMY…….”, “VEERA VIRATA…….” etc. The performance lasted for about an hour and the spectators came out with a great feeling of having seen an excellent performance in the ambience provided by Valiyapura, which created such great artists like Mathoor Kunju Pilla Panicker, Guru Gopinath, Champakkulam Pachu Pillai and Mohanan Kunju Panicker.

Photo Exhibition:A photo exhibition on the life and work of the renowned Velakali Aasan, the late Mathoor Mohanan Kunju Panicker (former president of Mathoor Devaswom Committee), was held in Valiyapura on May 24th & 25th. The show was inaugurated by the Mathoor Devaswom Committee President Mr.Rama Raja Varma on 24th morning in Valiyapura. The photographs depicted the contribution made by the late Mohanan Kunju Panicker to the ancient art form of Velakali. There were photographs showing him in full Velakali attire with such great personalities like Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. The exhibition made it clear to one and all that the late Panicker was the last of the great sons of the family who carried the name of Mathoor Panicker to greater heights.

Special Mathoor Kudumba Yogam:Members of the Mathoor family attended a special Kudumba Yogam on 24th afternoon after lunch to review the progress of the Punarudharana activities in the temple. The Devaswom President Mr. Rama Varma Raja presided over the function. After the presidential address, the Punarudharana Committee convenor, Mr. M. K. K. Panicker presented a report on the Punarudharana activities undertaken in the temple so far. He highlighted some of the problems faced by the members of the Punarudharana committee in undertaking the activities smoothly. Apart from being located in a remote place, the lack of adequate personnel to undertake the various activities was felt often. The convenor requested the members living in the locality to come forward and participate in the various affairs of the temple. It was pointed out that all members of the family should take utmost care to see that the temple and surroundings are not defiled by the actions of certain individuals including outsiders visiting the temple premises. Members were also requested to take interest in ensuring that the daily rituals in the temple are undertaken properly. They may report to the temple administrator about any improper things that have come to their attention. All members of the family were also requested to ensure that the Deva Chaithanyam increases in the temple through their actions resulting in the general well being of all members of the family. There was a suggestion to amalgamate the Devaswom Committee and the Punarudharana Committee for the smooth functioning of the future activities. The President reqested that the status quo be maintained till the next General Body Meeting of the Devaswom Committee.

Pending Punarudharana Activities

The following Punarudharana activities are pending to be undertaken in the Mathoor Sree Bhagavathy temple.

  1. Coating the copper roofing sheet of the main temple building (This could not be undertaken as this requires at least 40 rain free days to get best results)
  2. Renovation of Kalathattu.
  3. Repair of Kamba Vilakku (multi-level brass lamp) in front of the temple.
  4. Construction of compound wall in front of the Temple.
  5. Construction of main entrance gate.
  6. Renovation of Sarpakavu.
  7. Renovation of temple ponds (3 Nos.).
  8. Maintenance of Valiyapura.
  9. Maintenance of temple yard including land filling.
  10. Construction of a new temple for Siva.
  11. Construction of a new temple for Dhanwanthari.

All the above activities will have to be undertaken at the earliest. The only delaying factor is availability of adequate funds to undertake the activities. We now have a team of dedicated volunteers who are ready to spend their time and energy to ensure that the tasks are undertaken efficiently and successfully. Individuals or collective groups may sponsor any one of the above activities fully or partially and obtain Paradevatha’s blessings. There are a large number of members in the family who did not get a chance to properly participate through their contributions in the renovation activities so far. The above activities offer plenty of opportunities for such members to get involved and make their contributions to preserve this great family heritage built painstakingly by our forefathers and handed down to us through generations. Members are requested to contact the convenor for any additional information on the above.
