Course Description:

• Prerequisite: MAT 0012C or MAT 0018Cwith grade C or better or placement test
• This course is a prerequisite for college level mathematics courses

• This course does not apply toward an associate degree

• Grade of C or better in MAT 0028C required for MAT 1033C

Required Materials:

• MyMathLab Software included with new book purchase. You may purchase a MyMathLab student access kit [Red Bordered Kit]from the bookstore or online, if using a used textbook.
• If you have previously taken MAT0024C, copy your transcript from atlas & no card needed
• You MUST present the MyMathLab card, student access kit, or your transcript from atlas to an instructor in the Math Lab [7-240] during the 1st week of classes to register for Lab.
• Text: Elementary Algebra, 3rd ed., Carson, Jordan
• Developmental Math II PowerPoint Notes [Approx. $5 in VC Bookstore ~ not required, but VERY helpful as otherwise you must go to Sikora website and download these for each Ch.]
• Scientific Calculator: If you plan to continue your mathematics education, it would be in your best interest to purchase a TI-84+ graphing calculator [financial aid funds possible]
• Thin 2-pocket folder with 3 center prongs [left pocket = mini quizzes and class work with all work shown; center prongs = homework & problems worked in Lab with all work shown; right pocket = VocabularyPuzzle,red/blue/pencil studysheets]Due at each Chapter Test. You MUST grade the folder Rubric before turning it in for the Professor to check over and record the grade.
• Access to Professor Sikora’s website from a home or school computer thru Atlas or
• Access to Blackboard and MyMathLab software from a home or school computer

Attendance:

• Absolutely essential: Attendance is required for all Classes, Open Lab [50+ min/wk at VCin Math Lab 7-240 where Chapter Quizzes MUST be taken, note:lab homework can be doneat home], tests, and at the Final Exam in 11-142 during the last week of classes.
• Be on time or a few minutes early and ready to work (cell phones/beepers must be off)
• Missing 15% of class meetings (any reason) =possible withdrawal from class for inadequate attendance
• 3 Unexcused Absences (instructor not informed prior to absence via phone:

407-582-1625 or email: or written note given in class) = automatic withdrawal from class

• There will be NO unexcused MAKE-UPS: you are expected to participate in all activities at the scheduled times (phone or email instructor BEFORE emergency absences to prevent instructor withdrawing you from the course)
• An excused absence on any Chapter Test must be made up in the Testing Center Bldg 11-142 [bring VCC ID card] BEFORE the next class meeting or a Doctor/Hospital/Funeral Home signed excuse must be presented to prevent an automatic zero test grade.
• Any student desiring a grade of “W” must withdraw themselves (I won’t) before the withdrawal deadline 11/2/12. Failure to withdraw by deadline = 1 of 3 attempts to take this class at VC. If you stop coming to class and do not withdraw, your grade = “F”
• VC limits each student to 2 withdrawals per course. Upon the 3rd attempt in a course, a student will not be permitted to withdraw & will receive a grade for the course.
• A student missing the Final Exam without withdrawing =“F” forFinal grade

Homework:

• Procedure and technique practice is essential to master Algebra!!!
• All section problems from the Textbook & Lab work must be completed and in the center 3 clips of a 2-pocket folder by the next class. THEY WILL BE GRADED @ THE BEGINNING OF EVERY CLASS!
• Head each assignment with either Text or Lab section number and problem numbers
• Problems assigned from the textbook are odd numbered and must be worked out completely before checking the answers to those problems in the back of the book. If you have questions on any problems either the text or lab work, fill out a slip entitled: “Homework Explanation Request from Sections due today”. The instructor will go over as many of these requested problems as possible in the first 10 – 15 minutes of class. Additional questions will be taken up in the SL sessions with your Supplemental Learning Leader.
• Your test and lab homework/classwork/Vocabulary Puzzle and study sheet Notebook/Portfoliomust be pre-graded by the student & turned in for a grade on each test taking day

• Math Connections tutoring ~ Math ConnectionsProfessors have been trained to use techniques that help you become an independent learner. Since their goal is to help you become an independent learner, they will let you do the work as much as possible. The learning process requires a regular investment of your time, and patience is the key.

Extra Effort Tickets adds points to lowest test grade

• Study Group of classmates ~ verification of topic and time spent together [Maximum number of tickets allowed]

• Helping other classmates in our Review for Final Exam morning [8 am – 11:30 am] after 1 ¼ hours of work on the practice problems with a score of 28 correct out of 40 or 70%

Grades:

• To earn an “A”: Score of 70% or higher on ALL MML Quizzes [if not, must earn 70% or 28/40 or better correct answers on the computerized Final Exam] for Developmental Math II and acquire 90% of the points available through class & Lab activities
• To earn a “B”: Score of 70% or higher on ALL MML Quizzes [if not, must earn 70% or 28/40 or better correct answers on the computerized Final Exam] for Developmental Math II and acquire 80% of the points available through class & Lab activities
• To earn a “C”: Score of 70% or higher on ALL MML Quizzes [if not, must earn 70% or 28/40 or better correct answers on the computerized Final Exam] for Developmental Math II and acquire 70% of the points available through class & Lab activities
• To earn a “D”: acquire 60% of the points available through class,Lab activities & Final Exam

Developmental Math II Final Exam:

There will be a mandatory final exam delivered electronically - via Blackboard. The final exam consists of 40 questions (retakes are NOT allowed). Calculators are NOT allowed during the final, and formulas will not be provided. The final exam counts towards 25% of your overall grade.

There are (7) Quizzes in MyMathLab (MML) to help you master the course learning outcomes. A minimum passing score is not required on the final exam if the student completes all quizzes with a score of 70% or better.

Final Exam Possibilities:

1)The student scores 70% or better onALL(7) quizzes and then there is no minimum score on final exam to pass the course.

2)The student doesNOTscore 70% or better on ALL (7) quizzes: and then the student must pass the final exam with a minimum score of 70% (28 out of 40).

Developmental Math II Lab Component:

Students will take the MML quizzes, which are password protected, at the Math Center during their lab time. The purpose of using quizzes in MML is to emphasize student individualized learning and, at the same time, satisfy their academic needs. Students must take the MML quiz after completing the MML homework corresponding to that quiz

MML Quiz Possibilities:

1)The student scores 100% in their first attempt on the quiz: the student can continue to the next MML assignment (Homework and quiz)

2)The student scores less than 100% in their first attempt on the quiz: the student is required to complete a study plan (remediation assignment in MML). Upon study plan completion; students must take the quiz a second time. The goal is for students to obtain the maximum score possible in their quizzes with a minimum of 70% in the second attempt.

3) The third attempt will be left to instructor discretion. This is a good opportunity for you to seek additional assistance from the Math Connections professors and/or your SL Leader providing cooperative learning activities.

MML Quizzes and MML Homework Topic progression within the course:

Chapter 2 Quiz: Solve linear equations, literal equations and inequalities. Graph linear inequalities in one variable.

Chapter 6 Quiz: Exponents and Polynomials. Simplify algebraic expressions including those with parenthesis and exponents. Simplify an expression with integer exponents. Add, subtract, multiply and divide polynomials -Division by monomials only.

Chapter 7 Quiz: Factoring and solve quadratic equations by factoring.

Chapter 8 Quiz: Simplify, multiply and divide rational expressions. Add and subtract rational expression with monomials denominators.

Chapter 3 Quiz: Linear equations with applications, multi-step problem. Recognize proportional relationships. Convert unit of measurement across measurement systems.

Chapter 4 Quiz: Graphing linear equations using table of values, intercepts, slope- intercept form. Identify intercepts and slope of a line.

Chapter 9 Quiz: Simplify radical expressions (square roots). Simplify square root monomials that are added, subtracted and multiplied. Rationalize the denominator of the monomial. Solve algebraically a word problem the Pythagorean Theorem.

The West Campus Math Center is in 7-240. It is open from:

8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.on Monday through Thursday,

8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, and from

10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Saturday.

Closed on Sunday.
