1.Lines of Latitude are horizontal (go across, left/right) on the map. However lines of latitude measure north and south from the equator.

2. Lines of Longitude are lines of meridian and are shown on the map as lines that go up and down. However, lines of longitude measure east and west of the Prime Meridian.

3. A hemisphere is half of the world. Depending on the dividing line, it can either be Northern/Southern Hemisphere or Eastern/Western Hemisphere. (hemi = half; sphere = globe)

4. The Equator is a line of Latitude. It is at zero degrees and splits the Earth in half, into northern and southern hemispheres.

5. The Prime Meridian is the line of longitude, found at zero degrees and splits the Earth in half, into eastern and western hemispheres.

6. All maps display some distortion, which is a loss of accuracy. Since a globe has a similar shape of the Earth, it is the most accurate of maps.

Maps use tools to help us read them. They are the compass rose, map key and scale.

7. The compass rose on a map is a diagram (drawing) of a compass. It shows the (cardinal) directions of north, east, south and west.

8. The map key explains the symbols and colors on a map. They differ depending on the map’s purpose.

9. The map’s scaleshows relative size. On a smaller map of a town, an inch may equal a mile. On a larger map of continents an inch may equal 500 miles.

10. Climate is the average weather over many years. Weather is the day by day condition of the air and sky.

11. The Robinson Projection Map shows the least distortion, and only near the poles. It is the map used for Social Studiesclasses, this year.

12. Ocean is one of 4 large bodies of salt water on Earth.

13. Continent is a large body land on our planet. It usually is made up of countries. For instance, North America has Canada, America and Mexico.

Maps: give a 2 dimensional presentation of Earth

Presents the physical features of a particular region on a plane surface

Easy to use and is portable

Presents a distorted view because it is flat

Easier to identify regions

Globes: gives a 3 dimensional presentation of the entire world

Called a duplicate Earth because it is round in shape and shows accurate areas, distances, directions and relative shape and size

Presents a less deformed view as it is round in shape

Map/Globe: both give a presentation of our world

Both can show all 7 continents and 4 oceans

Both have positives and negatives
