January
/ DESE hosted 2008 International Forum on China Environmental Investment/ Regional Environment and Sustainable Development (RESD), a joint Ph.D course, was launched by Tsinghua and 5 other Asian universities, including Kyoto University, Tohoko University, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Pohang University of Science and Technology and Tongji University.
February
/ Tsinghua-Beijing Origin Water R & D Center for Environmental Membrane Technology was founded/ The opening ceremony of Sino-French Joint Master Program on Environment and Energy Management was held at Tsinghua. Presidents of both ENSMP and INSA de LYON attended the ceremony and delivered speeches respectively.
March
/ Vice Chairman DONG Jianhua of CPPCC visited DESE./ The DESE's development plan for the latter three years of the 11th five-year plan was outlined.
/ Prof. HE Kebin, faculty member of DESE, was awarded "Special Engaged Professor of the Yangtze River scholar"
/ Prof. ZHANG Tianzhu and Asso. Prof. WANG Cang, faculty members of DESE, respectively received a copy of certificate for the Nobel Peace Prize which was bestowed on the IPCC in 2007, as a return for their substantial contributions to the work of PICC over the years since the inception of the organization.

/ Celebration for Academician GU Xiasheng's 90th birthday and the donation ceremony of GU Xiasheng Scholarship Fund was held./ Prof. CHEN Jining, Executive Vice president of Tsinghua University, faculty member of DESE, was honored the title of China Environmental Ambassador.
/ SUEZ Environment joined hands with DESE to build Educational Laboratory of Environmental Science and Engineering.
/ Tsinghua DESE-J&K China Cleaning Energy Technology Co. Ltd. Waste to Energy Joint R&D Center was founded.
/ Cooperative agreement of the Sustainable Development Exchange Program II (2008-2010) between THU and VIU was signed.
/ DESE hosted "2008 Strategic Form on Urban Water Industry".
/ DESE continued to hold the title of Yearly Champion at the 51th Ma Yuehan Cup Track and Field Sports, and won women's Group Champion for the 4th time.

/ DESE took an active part to provide technological support in the earthquake relief and reconstruction operation./ Division of Drinking Water Safety of DESE was honored "National May Day Labor Medal".
/ Prof. LI Junhua, faculty member of DESE, was honored "2007 Tsinghua New Academic Star Award".
/ DESE hosted 2008 POPs Forum and the 3rd National POPs Seminar.
/ DESE hosted 2008 Tsinghua-Chalmers Seminar on Sustainable Development.
/ focusing on information about renewable resources trade and circular economy, which is a national major scientific pilot project during the 11th five year plan undertaken by DESE, was formally open.

/ New Energy & Environment International Research Center, relying on DESE, was awarded National Center for International Research jointly by MOST and SAFEA./ The 3rd Tsinghua Environment-Friendly Technology Competition, organized by DESE was concluded successfully.
/ As the 1st presiding unit, DESE formally started the joint doctoral course "Regional Environment and Sustainable Development" (RESD).
/ Microsoft donated a set of complicated environmental system simulation platform to DESE.
/ DESE hosted 2008 Advanced Technology Forum on Urban Water Industry.

/ Academician QIAN Yi, faculty member of DESE, was reelected as the Director of Academic Affairs Committee of Tsinghua University./ DESE Received a Thank-you Note from Environment Protection Bureau of Sichuan Province and a pennant from Environment Protection Bureau of Chengdu city for its outstanding contribution in the 5.12 earthquake relief operation.
/ Research team led by Prof. Wang Wei, faculty member of DESE, provided technical support for the work of "Combating Enteromorpha, Protecting Olympics".
/ DESE safeguarded the quality of Beijing Olympic Landscape Water, which was fuelled by reclaimed water.

/ Mr. Achim Steiner, UN Vice Secretary-general visited the source separation ecological health Project of Olympic Forest Park Undertaken by DESE./ Circular Economy Promotion Law, drawn up by a panel led by Prof. ZHANG Tianzhu, faculty member of DESE, was adopted.
/ "Urban Water Environment Remediation Technology Research and Integrated Demonstration of River Network around Tai Hu Lake", a grand national water science and technology special undertaken by DESE, was approved by experts and officially launched.
/ Dozens of students of DESE participated in the voluntary service for Beijing Olympics and Paralympics.

/ Prof. HU Hongying won 2008 National Distinguished Youth Science Fund./ Teaching Team of Environmental Engineering Led by Academician HAO Jiming was honored as 2008 Beijing Excellent Teaching Team.
/ Environmental Engineering Principle by Prof. HU Hongying was awarded 2008 Beijing Excellent Course.
/ Prof. ZHANG Xiaojian was honored the Nomination Award of "2008 Beijing People's Teacher".
/ A Ph.D Degree Thesis by YANF Bo, supervised by Prof. YU Gang, was selected into 2008 Beijing Excellent Ph.D Degree Thesis.
October
/ DESE was Honored the Title of "2008 Beijing Olympics and Paralympics Environmental Quality Safeguarding Model Unit" by MOEP. Prof. HAO Jiming and Prof. HE Kebin of DESE were honored the title of "2008 Beijing Olympics and Paralympics Environmental Quality Safeguarding Model Individual". Academician HAO Jiming was appointed as the Vice-President of the 9th Degree Assessment Committee of THU./ Prof. QU Geping, former Chairman of Environment and Recourses Committee of NPC, and former Chief of State Environmental Protection Administration, was invited to "Tsinghua Environment Forum" to give a lecture on the development of China's environment protection in the past 30 years of reform and opening-up.
/ Teaching Team of Environmental Engineering was honored as 2008 National Excellent Teaching Team.
/ Environmental Engineering Principle by Prof. HU Hongying was awarded 2008 National Excellent Course.
/ DESE held the 2nd National Ph.D. Candidate Academic Conference.
/ Environmental Quality Detection Center of Tsinghua University, based on DESE, gained national quality certification.
/ DESE co-hosted International Workshop on Greenhouse Gases Reduction Technologies and Economic Analysis.
November
/ "Olympic Air Quality Safeguard Research Project Group", headed by Academician HAO Jiming, was honored the title of "Tech-Olympic Advanced unit". Prof. HAO Jiming, HU Hongying and JIANG Zhanpeng of DESE was awarded "Tech-Olympic Advanced Individual" respectively./ Ms. Jacqueline Cramer, Minister of Environment Protection and Housing Planning Ministry of the Netherlands, attended the Sino-Dutch High-level Forum on Waste Environment Management hosted by DESE.
/ "Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development" won the 1st prize of 2008 Tsinghua Excellent Teaching Software.
/ DESE signed an environmental cooperative agreement with Environmental Protection Bureau of Kunshan city.
/ DESE signed a cooperative agreement with Norwegian University of Life Science.
/ The 3rd International Conference on Solid Waste Management and Treatment Technology was held at DESE.

December
/ "New Technology on Reclamation of Sewage of Lower Energy Consumption Membrane Bioreactor and its Engineering application" was awarded "the 1st Prize of 2008 Institutions of Higher Education Scientific and Technological Progress" by Ministry of Education. The principal achievement persons include Prof. HUANG Xia, WEN Xianghua and WANG Chenwen, faculty members of DESE./ "Research on Environmental Risk Evaluation of Polluted Site and its Reclamation Management Technology System" won "the 1st Prize of 2008 Environment Protection Science and Technology". The principal achievement persons include Prof. LI Guanghe, ZHANG Xu and CHEN Jining, faculty members of DESE.
/ Biology of Water Treatment (4th edition) by Academician GU Xiasheng and Introduction to Clean Production by Prof. ZHANG Tianzhu were selected into "2008 Beijing Higher Education First-class Teaching Materials".

/ DESE signed an intent letter with Environment Protection Bureau of Chengdu, capital city of southwest China's Sichuan province.

/ Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering in China by DESE, co-published by Higher Education Press and Springer, has entirely published original English contributions since the 4th issue of 2008.
