Week 10-November 9th-November13th

Look What the Children Learned This Week….

Language Arts:

  • During circle time a volunteer told us the date, we sang the Days of theWeek song, and wetalked about the weather, and added a number to our growing number line. We are practicing place value. We have a ones cup, a tens cup, and a hundreds cup. We made 4bundles of ten popsicle sticks and placed it in our tens cup. We counted on with our ones cup
  • We practiced our 8 sight words together chorally. The star picked 4 words from the pile and chose 4 children to use each word in a sentence. I taught them to snap their fingers for a period, raise their arm in the air for an exclamation mark, and to tap their finger to their cheek for a question mark. After the students shared their sentence we decided what punctuation we needed
  • We revisitedthe letter Aa and Mm. We practiced the sound and writing ofthe letter
  • Our theme this week is all about Using Our Senses. I read a book entitled Listen, Listen by Phillis Gershator. We discussed our five senses and how it gives us information about the world. The book talked all about what sounds we can hear in different seasons. The children were then given their very own Kid Writing Notebook. I modeled how to illustrate and write about my favorite season. The children wrote about their favorite season. They did a nice job. They are feeling a little more confident with their writing
  • We listened to My Five Senses by Aliki and played a game called, What Sense Do I Use? I named an object and the child took turns telling what sense they would use to experience it
  • We completed Projectable 6.1 on Descriptive Sentences. We shared how to make our sentences more interesting by adding descriptive words
  • We read together in our Journeys Book. We read a wordless story, Aa by Roberto Livingston and we took turns reading, I See by Sheila Hoffman. The children are doing a wonderful job reading with expression!
  • We completed Projectable 6.2 together, Sensory Words
  • I brought in an assortment of different colored apples for the children to experience using all of their senses. They colored a paper apple the same color of the apple they experienced. We graphed them and green was the winner!
  • It was so much fun having the parents listen to Elmer by David McKee. The children loved having you help them write what was special about them and coloring in patchwork Elmer! Thank you parents….the children loved having you in our classroom! 

Math:

  • We practiced counting 1-20 during circle time
  • I introduced a game called Monster Squeeze. I drew a number line 0-10 and gave one child a monster that said, Too High and gave a child a monster that said, Too Low. They stood at opposite ends of the number line. I whispered a number to them. The audience took turns saying a number. If it was too high the monster would cover that number and said, Too High. If it was too low the monster would cover that number and say, Too Low. They continued this until the number was revealed
  • We practiced writing our numbers on little wipe-off boards. I introduced subtraction by having them draw counters. We pretended they were cookies. A volunteer told us how many to eat and we crossed them off. Then they wrote a subtraction sentence! Super work and they all had fun…
  • We did an activity called Pocket Problems. I read Corduroy’s Pocketby Don Freeman. The children and I completed 6 addition and subtraction number sentences using a paper pocket and 10 counters. They did a wonderful job listening and forming their numbers! I then gave each child a tracer of a bear and overalls. I also gave everyone a paper pocket. They traced their bears on brown paper and green overalls. I modeledaddition problems using circles as counters. They practiced using 10 real counters to create addition problems. They chose one and drew circles on the pocket and wrote a number sentence on the pocket, then glued it on the overalls. They look adorable!
  • I introduced the term nonstandard units of measurement. The children used connecting cubes to measure objects around the room and completed a worksheet
