Occupational Health and Safety

(Reprinted from the BC Assessment Employee Portal)

BC Assessment is committed to ensuring that its business is carried out under healthy and safe working conditions.

BC Assessment management and your union take a leadership role in promoting safety at the work site. To address safety concerns, a permanent Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee has been established. This committee, made up of management and union representatives, meets several times throughout the year to address workplace safety issues of mutual interest and concern.

As a BC Assessment employee, you also play a critically important role in ensuring that you and your colleagues work safely. All employees are expected to take responsibility for their actions by ascertaining that safety practices are adhered to at all times.

ERGONOMICS

Ensuring that your computer workstation fits you and the type of work you do is a vital step in minimizing the risk of injury. Please refer to the booklet entitled: How to Make Your Computer Workstation Fit You.

ACCIDENT AT WORK SITE

Should you have an accident at your work site, you must report it immediately to your Supervisor. At this time you will be asked to complete the necessary Workers’ Compensation Board forms.

EVACUATION PROCEDURES

All Assessment offices have established evacuation procedures for the work site. Take time to review the floor plan posted in your office. Familiarize yourself with the plan and evacuation procedures, and find out where all the emergency exits are located.

WORKPLACE VIOLENCE PREVENTION

Included in the orientation package is the Employee Training Booklet. This booklet is part of a course which empowers you to protect yourself from violent crime. It provides strategies on how to protect yourself as well as reference material on violent crime in BC, knowing yourself and what to do after an incident.

SAFETY VIDEOS

BC Assessment endeavours to obtain resource material on safety. For example, appraisal personnel may wish to view safety videos on Dog Bite Protection or Bear Awareness. Both videos were developed to help personnel protect themselves against dog and bear attacks.

Other informational videos are available from the HR Division.
