Principal’s Message

It has only been a few days, but the school year is off and running. Students are quickly getting back into routines as teachers establish their expectations for academics and behaviors. This year, our staff will be learning about Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). This means establishing consistent core values and expectations in all areas of the building with staff utilizing common language with all of our students. We are looking forward to learning more about this practice with a goal to be fully implemented come school year 17/18.

Attending school regularly is important to the academic success of our students. Here is a great resource for parents to access when looking at school attendance and supporting their child: At Lincoln, attendance is always a goal of ours. Each month, we strive for 94% school wide. Our students get recognized on a monthly basis for their efforts. When students are sick, we certainly want them to stay home, but we appreciate our parents’ efforts with their attention to this. Establishing consistent routines at home such as checking student planners, a place to do homework, and going to bed at a good time will contribute to student success.

Picture Day

Picture Day will be September 19th. Picture forms will be sent home soon. Students should bring in their money the day of pictures. There will be a retake day selected in October in the chance that students are absent or parents would like a different picture, date to be determined.

PTC

The PTC meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 6- 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria and are always looking for parents, grandparents or caregivers who are interested in making Lincoln School even better for staff, students and families. They work together to offer the Halloween Hoopla, Lincoln Eagle Cards, Yearbook, Ice Cream Social, Lincoln Loves Learning, Sixth Grade Celebration, Teacher Appreciation Week and variousfundraiser events. Please contact Staci Fortunato, PTC President, at if you are interested in attending a meeting or volunteering at an event. Our first meeting of the year will be 9/20/16. Hope to see you there!

Box Tops for Education

We are collecting Box Tops for Education this year to earn money for Lincoln School. Our 3rdstudents from Mrs. Heron’s class and 6thgrade students from Mrs. Clark’s class will be collecting, counting, and calculating the money we earn to be submitted. Money from this is used to help purchase supplies, books, and fund special field trips. Box Top bags will be sent home for students to collect their 50 Box Tops. Students turn in their bags once they have their 50. Please make sure that their names and classroom teacher’s name is on the bag so that they receive credit. We thank you in advance for your efforts!

School Visitors

We ask that all school visitors sign in at the main office and take a visitor’s pass when heading down to their child’s class during school hours. Our staff will provide friendly reminders for those who forget. This procedure is to maintain the safety of students during school hours.

Library News

The Lincoln library program has some exciting opportunities in store for your child this year: Our program promotes the very best of children's literature to your child with some activitiesdesigned to help student's enjoy the stories even more. We will be doing our very best to get (or keep) your children "hooked on reading" by recommending specific reading materials that are a good fit for them. We will add many more new titles this year of the latest and most exciting new books for young readers, including quality non-fiction.

At each grade level from K-2 students will learn how the library works and the different kinds of books we have and have a story tie each week. The 3-5 grades, students will be learning research and computer skills specifically suited to their needs.Library lessons will stress good Digital Citizenship, helping your child make safe decisions when using the Internet. We have a lot of special events being planned, including, a book fair from 10/21/16 - 10/28/16, and the MSBA reading challenge for grades 5&6 and The Chickadee Award books for grades K-3. We are very busy unpacking and getting books shelf ready. Library classes will start on 9/6. K & 1 grades will sign out 1 book for 1 week. Grades 2-6 will sign out 2 books for 2 weeks. Please help your child by keeping books in a safe place from damage and returning them when due. I am ready and excited about this coming year and am committed to making the library your child's favorite place in the school!

Communication

There are several ways that parents can receive information about upcoming events going on at Lincoln School. Each month, a newsletter will be sent home to families keeping them informed of what is going on. We also keep our school website, up to date with current dates and information. We alsohave a school Facebook page as yet another way to get information out to our Lincoln Families. Interested parents can ‘Like’ our page at Lincoln Elementary School- Augusta, ME. If parents do not wish for their children’s photos to be used on our website, please make sure to sign the Media Release form stating so.

Paperwork

On the first few days, lots of important paperwork will be sent home that needs to get filled out and returned to school. To help process things quickly, we ask that these get returned back to school as soon as possible. We appreciate families’ attention to this!

5th and 6th Grade Band

We are looking forward to another fun filled band for 5th and 6th graders. Sixth graders will begin band next week, 9/12/16. Teachers have been provided a schedule of specific times. Students need to remember to bring their instruments to school on the appropriate days. For 6th grade, full band will be on Mondays and group lessons on Tuesdays.

All 5th graders will watch a band demonstration on 9/9/16 and will also be provided informational paperwork to be brought home. Students who will be renting from the music company will pick up their instrument on Thursday, 9/22/16, between 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Cony High School in the Food Court. If students already have their own instrument or will be using a school instrument, they do not need to attend this meeting. Specific lessons for 5th grade students will be after the child chooses an instrument. For 5th grade, both lessons and full band will be on Mondays.

Nurse Bobbi’s Nuts and Bolts
  1. All medications (Over the Counter and Prescription) should be dropped off by a parent as meds of any kind are not allowed to be carried by students. (Unless authorized by a doctor to carry an Inhaler).
  2. If you have medications to drop off and need to be at the school before 8 am please call me in advance to arrange that.
  3. Medications (Over the Counter and Prescription) should be dropped off with the nurse only. Medications cannot be left unattended and signatures need to be acquired by parents.
  4. If your child has Asthma, Allergies (Epi-Pen), Seizures, or Diabetes, a new Action Plan from your provider is required every year.
  5. If cough drops are sent in, please send a note with permission for your child to take them at school. All cough drops will be kept in the nurse’s office for our students’ safety.
  6. Please be sure that prescription medications have not expired, are in their original container, and have a pharmacy label on them.
  7. Inhalers must have a pharmacy label on them or they will not be able to be used.
  8. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call and ask!

Morning Drop Off & End of Day Dismissal

Due to coverage, students should not be dropped before 8:00 a.m. When dropping off children, parents should not utilize the bus loop due to the buses coming and going. Students can either go into the cafeteria for breakfast, join our Homework Club in the library, or head to the playground (gym on rainy days).

In the afternoon, our early buses (59, 54, 62) are dismissed at 2:40 p.m. All other students are dismissed at the end of the day beginning at 2:45 p.m. First our walkers are called followed by parent pick ups and the remaining buses as they arrive. For parents picking up their child, we ask that parents sign their children out in the main office, unless they are walkers. Parents can wait for their child in the cafeteria. If there are any changes to your child’s end of day, please contact the main office by 2:00 p.m. The end of day can get pretty busy and we want to ensure a safe ride home for your child. Please do not use the bus loop when picking your child up at dismissal time.
