Lesson Architect –

The University of West Florida has produced an excellent tool online for creating a lesson plan aligned to Florida’s Sunshine State Standards. Follow the instructions below to complete a lesson plan using the The Lesson Architect™.

  1. The Lesson Architect™allows you to plan lessons and learn about lesson planning at the same time. You can save your lessons and edit them at a later time. The FCAT assessed Sunshine State Standards are tagged so as you build your lesson plan you will be able to determine which Sunshine State Standards you are including in your lessons are covering topics included on the FCAT.
  2. The Lesson Architect™features ANDIE who will help you plan your lessons by “Telling You” about each step, “Showing You” how the Model Lesson looks, and “Guiding You” with questions you may not have considered. As you plan your lesson using The Lesson Architect™ access a database of best practices and web links that will assist you with your planning. Also, when you need a little more information, go to the STEPS Tutorial Library.
  3. There are eight steps in The Lesson Architect™ that form an instructional design process for the development of your lesson plan.

During these steps, there is an “Ask Andie” button that will link you to ANDIE. The Show Me feature will illustrate a unit created on Ants that was designed using each of the eight steps of the planning process.

  1. Direct your Internet browser to the website:
  2. Register and create an account.
  3. Click on “Learn Steps” in the left-hand column.
  4. Click on and explore WEBLINKS.
  5. Note that the links given are connected to the benchmarks for the discipline.
  6. Now click on STANDARDS. Browse the Florida Sunshine State Standards which are the benchmarks for what you will be teaching.
  7. Using the content and grade level that you have been working with all semester, create a lesson that will require the following elements:
  8. Direct teaching by you for at least 5 minutes and student work completed in two one-hour class meetings.
  9. Students working in groups of 3 or 4
  10. An end “product” – play, story, report, poster – that the students will display or present to the class.
  11. Key all activities to the Florida Sunshine State Standards using Lesson Architect
  12. Complete all of the STEPS in the Lesson Architect to develop a Unit and then a Lesson Plan.
  13. Next you will complete the KWHL Chart at the end of this document.
  14. Define at least five (5) “What do we know” boxes and corresponding W, H, and L columns.
  15. Include a description at the bottom on how this relates to the lesson plan you developed in the Lesson Architect
  16. Read about KWHL Charts (pgs. 342 to 344 in the 5th Edition of the textbook)
  17. Use the following links to research ideas concerning KWHL Charts
  18. When you have completed the KWHL Chart and developed a complete lesson in the Lesson Architect then submit both in a combined Word Document. Cut-n-paste the Lesson Architect results into your Word Document above the KWHL chart. Save the file with the first letter of your first name, your entire last name, and the title, “Project_9” as the file name for this file. (Example: J_Doe_Project_9).
  19. To cut-n-paste the Lesson Architect, finish development of lesson plan using the STEPS and then click on the Planbook. Once the planbook is visible, then press the Print This Lesson icon. When the lesson plan displays highlight all of the text on the web page and copy it into the Word Document.
  20. Upload this to the respective location in your virtual classroom.
  21. You will be graded with the following rubric:

Accomplishments / Needs Improvement / Good / Well Done / Excellent / Exemplary
Spelling and Grammar / Four or more errors in spelling or grammar are found in the KWHL Chart or the Lesson Architect.
3.0 points / Three errors in spelling or grammar are found in either the KWHL Chart or the Lesson Architect.
3.5 points / Two errors in spelling or grammar are found in either the KWHL Chart or the Lesson Architect.
4.0 points / An error in grammar or spelling is found in either the KWHL Chart or the Lesson Architect.
4.5 points / Both the Lesson Architect and the KWHL Chart are free of spelling or grammar mistakes.

Lesson Architect / Some STEPS in the Lesson Architect are incomplete or missing and the descriptions are inadequate.
3.0 points / All STEPS of the Lesson Architect process are complete but a majority of the descriptions are inadequate.
3.5 points / All STEPS of the Lesson Architect process are complete but the descriptions in some steps are inadequate.
4.0 points / All STEPS of the Lesson Architect process are complete at a level of excellence.
4.5 points / All STEPS of the Lesson Architect process are complete at an exemplary level.

The Lesson Plan / The Lesson Plan is not adequate for the assignment.
3.0 points / The Lesson Plan is not well planned or incomplete in ways that would be difficult to implement.
3.5 points / The Lesson Plan is adequate and has detail sufficient to pull it off.
4.0 points / The Lesson Plan developed is well conceived and planned.
4.5 points / The Lesson Plan developed is well conceived and planned and goes beyond the basics of the assignment.
