Salary range: $8.50-$10.00
Reports to and assists the Animal Care Manager in all responsibilities relating to the proper care of and maintenance of the animals housed at the shelter. Performs the duties of the shelter technician in providing routine and basic animal care. Assumes the responsibilities of the Animal Care Manager in his/her absence.
Cross-trained to perform as the backup for the Shelter Assistant in his/her absence.

Requirements

Education and Experience: Must have high school diploma or GED.

Skills: Must love animals. Must have ability to handle animals.

Must possess excellent customer service and communication skills. Have the ability to maintain an upbeat, positive attitude even under stressful situations.

Must be able to work well with others and deal with conflict in a professional and constructive manner.

Must be able to work weekends and holidays assigned.

Must be able to work overtime, when requested.

Meet physical requirements: sit, stand, kneel, bend over frequently, and be able to lift over 50lbs. Will be holding animals daily to assist with administering of medication or blood drawing.

Previous experience as a veterinary assistant, or, working/volunteering in an animal shelter. Veterinary and veterinary tech students are given preference over candidates without veterinary experience.

Computer skills with proficiency in data entry.

Ability to operate a multi-line phone, fax, printer, and excellent filing skills.

Must pay close attention to details.

Medical records experience a plus.

Possess the ability to monitor and report to the Animal Care Manager and Shelter Manager as needed; to work independently and as a team. Also, request assistance as needed to complete various tasks.

Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license and have dependable transportation.

Typical Duties

·  Care for animals at the shelter, including feeding, watering, cleaning cages and providing special care or medication as needed.

·  Handles animals on a daily basis, including cats, dogs, kittens and puppies. Handling animals includes: holding, walking, petting, other.

·  Assists with the maintenance of the cages and building as needed.

·  Meets and greets with public individuals in a friendly and professional manner. Show animals, answer questions, assist with information or paperwork. Representing the Society to the community as a professional. (I.E. knowledgeable, concerned, polite, and compassionate).

·  Perform as the backup for the Shelter Assistant/Shelter Technician for data entry of adoption information, customer information, and animal information into PetPoint.

·  Enter medical information regarding animals into PetPoint.

·  Will perform as the backup for the Shelter Assistant/Shelter Technician for taking pictures and posting adoptable animals on the HSMC Website, Petfinder, Pettango, Facebook, and more.

·  Assist Animal Care Manager in maintenance of accurate and thorough records, including cage cards, shelter statistics and possibly health records.

·  Primary lead person and go to person for all Shelter Technicians in regards to animal care and adoptions.

·  Assures that adopters are provided with basic pet ownership information. Assists Animal Care Manager on educating the public on pet related issues and performs adoption counseling, as needed.

·  Works closely with the Animal Care Manager on the HSMC Foster Program. Keeps records up to date of all animals in foster and foster applicants. Works with the Animal Care Manager in creating and maintaining an Animal Transfer Network and researching new shelters/rescues to work with.

·  Follows all rules, regulations, safety procedures and policies. Role Model for other technicians.

·  Assists with the Humane Ohio program. Including transporting animals, maintaining proper paperwork for Humane Ohio, and working with the clinic staff and the public to convey procedures, schedules, and more.

·  May transport or assist with transporting animals to the veterinarian, obtaining proper instructions and paperwork from veterinarian.

·  Undergoes updated training, as needed, including proper basic medical care of animals. Attend microchip training.

·  Administer vaccinations and tests, when needed. Assure all animals are up to date on vaccinations and that all blood tests and spaying/neutering are completed prior to adoption.

·  Perform as the backup for the Animal Care Manager in keeping an accurate inventory of medical supplies and medication.

·  May assist in examining incoming animals to determine age, sex, health and temperament. Utilizes a variety of safety practices in handling all animals. Ensures that all animals are properly documented upon intake.

·  Assists the Animals Care Manager and Public Relations/Shelter Manager in shelter operations, including training staff and maintaining shelter records.

·  Other duties as assigned.
