Las Vegas Centennial

City of 100 Murals Project

Mural Application Form

The Las Vegas Centennial Commission was formed last year to plan and coordinate a wide range of activities and events celebrating the city’s 100th birthday on May 15, 2005. A key cultural Centennial initiative now underway --the City of 100 Murals Project-- is a broad based community effort to create a network of murals at sites throughout the metropolitan valley over the next 12 months. A ten member Mural Task Force (MTF) coordinates the project and will review and select mural sites and artists based on criteria, guidelines and available resources.

Please complete this application if you are interested in producing a mural at your site. The application must come from the owner of the property or the owner’s representative (which may be an artist collaborating with the property owner.) The deadline for an application is March 1, 2005. If an application is submitted without a suggested artist, the MTF can select an artist for the site.

Once the application is approved by the MTF, a $1,000 stipend will be paid to the artist to design and coordinate the creation of the mural. Supplies/materials of up to $250 will also be provided. The host site is encouraged to match the stipend and provide additional funds to support the production of the mural if necessary.

Mural applications may be mailed to City of 100 Murals Project, 749 Veterans Memorial Drive, Las Vegas, Nevada 89101. Information, call (702) 229-5431.

How does the mural relate to the Las Vegas Centennial?

Our mural will portray plants indigenous to the Las Vegas area. The metal sheeting used to frame each mosaic and then bolting it to a concrete or brick wall symbolizes the industrial progress made in our city since its birth. The idea is not to portray the destruction of the desert foliage, but to celebrate the effort Las Vegas has made to embrace its desert environment by incorporating the natural surroundings into the ongoing growth.

Summary of artist’s background and experience (attach a resume or bio )

Has the artist produced a mural, similar artwork or worked with the public before on a collaborative art project? Please explain

This artist has participated and produced several collaborative art projects and worked with the public on many levels including: construction and decoration of parade floats, enlargement and transfer of logos to exterior school walls, administration of drop-in arts and crafts programs at The Children's Museum in Seattle and Lied Discovery Children's Museum, development and instruction of a parent and child arts and crafts class at CCSN, as well as an arts and crafts artist residency through the City of Las Vegas, Leisure Services Department, New Directions YouthArts.

As the artist, please describe the themes of the mural and how they might be rendered (what the mural will look like.)

This mural will depict indigenous plants in the Las Vegas area using a series of ceramic shard mosaic squares. The colors used will reflect the true colors (or the closest choice offered at Home Depot) of each plant but maintaining the same background colors (sand and/or light blue) on each mosaic. Graphic representations will be drawn from photos of each plant. These images will then be converted into black and white, enlarged, and transferred (via graphite) to cut and primed 18" x18" plywood squares. The students will prepare the tiles, lay down the broken tile pieces, and apply the grout. The artist will construct and assemble the metal sheeting frames. The zinc metal will remain in its natural state. Please see photo of sample:

Please describe how the artist will engage the community to help produce the mural.

The artist is currently a part-time employee of WestCare Nevada Women and Children's Campus teaching arts and crafts. Volunteers will be recruited from this pool of student clients.

Please provide a brief outline of the mural stages and the time frame.

Because of restrictions associated to our facility, the artist plans to have several steps completed prior to the students' participation:

About 20 plants have already been researched and selected via visits to the Red Rock Canyon Information Center, Desert Gardens and internet surfing. The students will choose from this group which flowers to include in our mural. I will create the graphic representations to maintain an overall style consistency.

Photo references will be compiled for each plant, a graphic representation created from the photos, then this image will be converted to a black and white. This sample is the Beaver Tail Cactus:

The black and white image will be enlarged and the image transferred to the prepared boards (already cut and primed). At this point, the students, using the color references provided, will participate in preparing ceramic tiles and laying tile:

The tile adhesive must set undisturbed for 24 hours before grouting can be done. The tile is grouted, allowed to dry overnight then coated with grout sealer. The frame is assembled after the sealer is dry:

Again, the time frame is dependent on the number of mosaics created and number of volunteers participating. This one mosaic took one person about a week to complete, including drying time.

Other comments:

Examples of other plants rendered may included Blue-Eyed Grass, Brittlebush, Yucca, and Poppy:
