UNIT TITLE / Apply paint by spray
APPLICATION / This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to spray-paint a wide range of surfaces. It includes planning for the work, preparation of materials and application area, setting up and testing the spray equipment, application of paint and completion of clean-up activities.
It includes working with others as a member of a team.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. / Prepare for task. / 1.1 / Identify and confirm task instructions.
1.2 / Identify and follow legislative and organisational requirements for workplace health and safety (WHS) and environmental protection.
1.3 / Assess safety signage and barricade requirements and install accordingly.
1.4 / Select plant tools and equipment, check for serviceability and report andrectify any faults.
1.5 / Calculate materials quantities.
1.6 / Obtain and prepare materials andposition ready for use.
2. / Prepare materials and application area. / 2.1 / Set up work area to suit spray system being used.
2.2 / Mask off or cover surfaces adjoining application area prior to application of spray paint coatings.
2.3 / Ensure adequate ventilation to maintain a safe environment.
2.4 / Ensure application area remains free of dust and foreign matter.
2.5 / Mix paint and adjust viscosity to allow for application process in accordance with manufacturer recommendations, plans and specification.
3. / Set up and test spray equipment. / 3.1 / Select spray equipment, accessories and lines for the spray system being used and placeready for use.
3.2 / Check fittings for function and security and report any faults.
3.3 / Test safety devices and report any faults.

4.2 / Apply paint to surface using correct application technique to achieve an even finish with opacity and sheen level in accordance with job specification.

5. / Clean up and store equipment. / 5.1 / Dismantle, check, clean and maintain spray gun and associated components and equipment in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations and operator's manual.
5.2 / Store spray-paint materials and solvents in compliance with manufacturer specifications and legislative and organisational requirements for workplace health and safety (WHS) and environmental protection.
5.3 / Dispose of paint waste, water and solvents used in cleaning painting equipment in an environmentally sustainable manner.
5.4 / Clear work area and dispose of, reuse and recycle materials.
FOUNDATION SKILLS

Assessment Requirements

PERFORMANCE EVIDENCE
A person who demonstrates competency in this unit must:
  • apply paint using an acrylic spray painting system to a surface of at least six square metres
  • apply paint using an alkyd or solvent spray painting system to a surface of at least six square metres
  • apply acrylic paint using an airless high volume low pressure (HVLP) system to a door of at least two square metres
Finishes must be to specification in terms of defects, thickness, colour, level of opacity, finish, texture and sheen.
The person demonstrating competency must:
  • comply with legislative and organisational requirements for WHS and environmental protection
  • use tools and equipment safely and efficiently
  • communicate and work effectively with others
  • complete tasks to specification

KNOWLEDGE EVIDENCE
To be competent in this unit, a person must demonstrate knowledge of:
  • legislative and organisational requirements for WHS and environmental protection:
  • risk assessment and management
  • safety data sheets (SDS)
  • personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • management of dust, noise and liquid and solid waste
  • the use, limitations and serviceability-checking of tools and equipment used for spray-painting:
  • airless spray units
  • conventional spray units
  • high volume, low pressure (HVLP) spray applications
  • electrostatic spray applications
  • compressors
  • diaphragm
  • hoses
  • piston airless spray unit (electrical, pneumatic and petrol)
  • regulators
  • spray guns
  • spray tips and filters.
  • The safe use, application and limitations of coatings, including their compatibility with different substrates:
  • solvent-based (alkyd, urethane, urethane/alkyd, urethane oil or modified alkyd resins)
  • two-pack
  • water-based
  • latex-based
  • water repellents for timber
  • alternative and natural coatings, including non-toxic, low odour and low- and no-VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) paint
  • Australian Paint Approval Scheme (APAS) classifications
  • processes for cleaning up after task completion in compliance withlegislative and organisational requirements for WHS and environmental protection:
  • disposal, reuse and recycling of solid and liquid waste
  • cleaning and storage of tools and equipment

ASSESSMENT CONDITIONS
Assessors must satisfy the requirements for assessors contained in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations.
Assessment of performance must be undertaken in the workplace or in a simulated workplace environment. Tasks are to be performed to the level of proficiency and within the time limits that would be expected in a workplace.
Assessors are responsible for ensuring that the person demonstrating competency has access to:
  • task instructions
  • tools, equipment and materials
  • manufacturers’ specifications and safety data sheets (SDS) for coatings and other materials
