The following guidelines for the 2017 State Activities Day are included in this packet:

When reading the Event Criteria descriptions, it is important to note:

  1. Entries, submissions, and presentations (photo, poster, demonstration, action exhibit, garment, speech) which have been previously delivered at State Activities Day may NOT be repeated. All presentations and submissions must be new work completed since May 30, 2016.
  1. A youth may participate in the same event with two different presentations as long as scheduling allows. Example, a youth may present a team demonstration and an individual demonstration on different topics.
  1. Live animals are not allowedat the event.
  1. Firearms may not be included in any 4-H State Activities Day or Eastern States Exposition presentations. For presentations related to firearms, models or photos must be substituted.
  1. The State Activities Day participant entry form deadline in the 4hOnline system is April 13, 2017, but please submit registrations as soon as your County Activity Day is over. Please do not send completed forms to the State Office–County Office staff are responsible for entering complete information into the database. The registration system will be available as of March 2nd.
  1. The completed database will be returned to the counties to review and confirm accuracy before assignments are sent to participants.
  2. Submission deadline of Fashion Revue Participants is May 1, 2017.

DEMONSTRATIONS

PARTICIPANT SUBMISSION CRITERIA

  • NEW THIS YEAR!Each county may send their top two winners in each category within each age range; Juniors (age 8-10 by 1/1/2017), Intermediates(age 11-13 by 1/1/2017), andSeniors (age 14 and older by 1/1/2017), however, the qualifying youth must have scored a minimum of 39 points (75%); for minimum score for STEMonstrations is 31 points (75%). Teams can be comprised of up to 3members, and will compete in the division of their oldest member. Participants must be atleast 8 years old to be eligible for State Activities Day consideration, and at least 12 years of age to be eligible for Eastern States Exposition.

When completing each participant’s electronic registration form, please select the category that best fits the participant’s demonstration from the descriptions below. If you have a demonstration that does not resemble any of the topics below, use #19 (Open Class) and describe the subject matter in an accompanying email.Please note the State 4-H Office may contact you regarding placement.

EQUIPMENT: Tables, easels, and projector (upon request) will be provided; all other equipment is the responsibility of exhibitor.

AWARDS Awards will be presented to the top Junior, Intermediate, and Senior. Participants aged 12 and up who receive awards will be invited to attend Eastern States Exposition.

HORSE DEMONSTRATION EXCEPTIONS:

Additionally, each county may send:

  • 2 Senior Individual Horse Demonstrations and 2 Senior Horse Team Demonstrations provided those members have not participated in that specific event at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup in the past. Winners and alternates in the Horse Communicationsevents are eligible to compete at the New England Regional Horse Contest annually and at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup every odd-numbered year.
  • 2 Intermediate members with a horse-themed topic in individual and/or team demonstration.

Horse Demonstration Time guidelines:1 point is deducted for each minute (or fraction) under or over the time limit.

Individual: Intermediates 5- 10 minutesSeniors 9 – 12 minutes

Team presentation: Intermediates 8-12 minutesSeniors 10-15 minutes

Horse Demonstration award notes:

In the horse contest, the highest scoring team and individual will be eligible to earn a trip to Louisville, Kentucky to compete at the National 4-H Horse Round-Up. Funding is provided by the 4-H Foundation of New Hampshire.Outstanding Junior horse presentations will be recognized at the awards ceremony, but are not eligible for regional or national event other than ESE).

ACTION EXHIBITS

Deadline for submission of Action Exhibit Participants April 13, 2017

  • NEW THIS YEAR! Each county may send their top two exhibits per age group; Juniors (age 8-10 by 1/1/2017), Intermediates (age 11-13 by 1/1/2017), and Seniors (age 14 and older by 1/1/2017), however, the qualifying exhibit must have scored a minimum of 30 points (75%).Teams can be comprised of up to 3 members, and will compete in the division of their oldest member. Participants must be at least 8 years old to be eligible for State Activities Day consideration, and at least 12 years of age to be eligible for Eastern States Exposition.
  • Each county may send their top 2 exhibits per age group, minimum age is8 years old by 1/1/17. Team exhibits may be comprised of diverse ages, and will compete in the division of their oldest member. Maximum participants per exhibit is 3.
  • Time guidelines:50 minute time period of youth engaging with judges and audience, with a 15 minute set up time.
  • Tables and easels will be provided; all other equipment must be provided and managed by the exhibitor.

Awards:Awards will be presented to the top two Action Exhibits in each age division. The top 2 scorers in each division (12 years of age or older) will be invited to attend Eastern States Exposition.

PUBLIC SPEAKING

Deadline for submission of Public Speaking Participants April 13, 2017

  • Each county may send top two Intermediate members (age 11-13) and top two Senior members (age 14-18), to speak on any topic.

Awards:

  • Awards will be presented to the top 3 Intermediate and the top 3 Senior public speakers.
  • Time permitting; a notable participant may be invited to deliver his/her speech at the State Activities Day Awards Ceremony.
  • Awardees aged 12 years and older will be invited to attend Eastern States Exposition.
  • HORSE CONTEST

In addition, Counties may send:

  • 2 top two Senior Horse Public Speakers provided those members have not participated in public speaking at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup in the past. Winners and alternates in the Horse Communications events are eligible to compete at the New England Regional Horse Contest annually and at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup every odd-numbered year.
  • Top two 2 Intermediate Public Speakers with a horse-themed topic.

  • Outstanding Intermediate horse presentations will be recognized with rosettes at the awards ceremony (they do not go on to any regional or national event other than ESE)
  • Awardees aged 12 years and older will be invited to attend Eastern States Exposition.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Deadline for submission of photography entries is April 13, 2017.

Photographs must have been taken after May 31, 2016.

Mounted photograph(s) must be delivered to the State 4-H Office by May 1, 2017 for evaluation.

  • Each county may send 3 posters, from members age 8 or over as of 1/1/17. Participants MUST be 12years or older as of 1/1/17 for their entry to be eligible for advancement to Eastern States Exposition.

Note: Members do not have to be enrolled in the photography project. It is the decision of each county whether or not they will allow one member to exhibit more than one photograph at State Activities Day.

  • Prints (black & white or color) must not exceed 9"x12". Entries can be matted and framed to a larger overall size.
  • Each photography exhibit must be identified with a caption on the reverse side. Required information includes:
  • Name, address, and county, age
  • Equipment used - Type of Camera, Flash, Filters, etc.
  • Type of Processing - Commercially Printed or otherwise
  • Any enhancements made
  • Members can enter photographs in the following categories:
  • New Hampshire at its Best
  • 4-H at its Best/4-H Promotion
  • Open category
  • Awards will be given to the top 6-8 entries, with at least two awards to the top two Intermediate photographs.

POSTER EXHIBIT

NH 4-H State and County Poster Contest Rules & Entry Form

1. Rules

  • Each county may send 3 posters, from members age 8 or over as of 1/1/17.Participants MUST be 12 years or older as of 1/1/17 for their entry to be eligible for advancement to Eastern States Exposition.
  • Posters must be made on standard poster board measuring 14” x 22”. They may be horizontal or vertical. Posters on non-standard size board will not be accepted.
  • Posters may be produced by any medium including: watercolor, ink, crayon, acrylic, charcoal, and/or oils. Word processed lettering and computer generated graphics are acceptable.
  • Posters may be three-dimensional, however must be no more than 1/4” high (must be able to lay flat in a pile).
  • Poster should be able to be read from 10’ to 15’ away, and should convey one clear message (not a collage)
  • Other than the 4-H Clover, posters may not incorporate copyrighted materials like "Garfield" or "Snoopy" cartoon characters or trademarked materials such as depictions of items with names like “Elmers Glue” or “Campbell’s Soup”
  • If the 4-H Clover is used, it may not be distorted and no images may be superimposed over it. The statement “18 USC 707” must legibly appear at the right of the base. Any use of the official 4-H Clover (any clover with “H’s” on the leaves) must be used in accordance with the rules governing the emblem. Official 4-H graphics and regulations may be found at:
  • Posters categories are: 4-H Citizenship, 4-H Healthy Living, 4-H Promotion, and 4-H Science.

NH 4-H Flix Video Contest

(Adapted from North Dakota State University Extension)

Description

  • Each county may send up to a total of 3 individual/team entries. Teams can be comprised of up to 3 members, and will compete in the division of their oldest member. Participants must be at least 8 years old to be eligible for State Activities Day consideration, and at least 12 years of age to be eligible for Eastern States Exposition (by 1/1/2017).
  • Videos can include contestant’s choice of music and video production techniques, including but not limited to; video footage, still photography, computer animation, stop motion animation, etc.
  • Contestants will be judged on creativity, flow of the video, technical performance, and presentation skills in presenting their video to a panel of judges.

Contest Rules

  • Videos must be 3-5 minutes in length, including the credits
  • The video must have credits showing who participated in the creation of the video and what their roles were. The credits also must include the title of the video and any participants.
  • Others who are not taking part in the contest may appear in the video, however, all editing and production of the video must be done by the contestants.
  • All music, video, images and computer animations used must be 4-H appropriate. Contestants should seek guidance from their 4-H leaders if they need help determining if content is 4-H appropriate.
  • Video must comply with copyright laws and 4-H emblem must be used appropriately. See 4-H Flix website for informational links.
  • Photo releases must be submitted with the video for everyone appearing in the video.
  • Video must be submitted on a CD, DVD or flash drive and must be labeled with the contestant’s names, ages, and county.
  • Parents, 4-H leaders and others are encouraged to inspire, guide and help with developing ideas for the video; however, the video entry must be the work of the 4-H member or team.

Definition of 4-H Appropriate

An entry in the NH 4-H Flix contest will be considered 4-H Appropriate if it meets the following guidelines:

  • It is free of violence
  • Does not contain swearing or vulgarity
  • Is respectful to the community, actors and viewers.

Awards

  • Awards will be given to the top 6-8 entries, with at least two awards to the top two Intermediate entries.

Each award includes (2) admission passes, (1) parking pass, and (2) lunch tickets to the Big E (no age restriction), as well as eligibility for Eastern States jacket, per County funding criteria (12 years of age and above).

Use of inappropriate music, video, images or computer animation will disqualify the entry immediately and the contestants will not receive a score.

2017 STATE ACTIVITIES DAY

FASHION REVUE

  • 50 Advanced score sheet category members who are 12 or older as of 1/1/17 will compete in the State Fashion Revue. The number of participants invited per county will vary each year based on the countyClothing and Textiles project enrollment and participation in the countyFashion Revue program.
  • The number of representatives for 2017 will be forwarded to counties by Fashion Revue Coordinator shortly (these will be based on information from 2016 county reports).
  • If you cannot send the number of delegates you are allotted, please let Fashion Revue Coordinator know as soon as possible and she will select from the alternate list. The order of the alternate list will also be provided shortly.
  • In addition, each county may send 6 representatives who will only model their garments at the State Fashion Revue during State Activities Day. These should be distributed as follows:
  • 3 high scoring members using the Advanced score sheet who were not invited for judging
  • 3 top scoring members using the Intermediate score sheet.
  • If counties do not have 3 members eligible from the advanced or intermediate levels, more representatives may be sent in one category or the other to equal 6 participants. Minimum age in both categories is 12 by 1/1/17.
  • Fashion Selections – Each county may send 3 representatives who are 12 or over to participate in the Fashion Selections judging and model their garments at the State Fashion Revue during State Activities Day.

Awards: All State Fashion Revue participants receive a State 4-H Activities Day participation ribbon. Rosettes are presented to the highest scoring participants who are judged in the State Fashion Revue and Fashion Selections programs. Participants in the State Activities Day Fashion Revue Programs are selected to model in the New EnglandCenter at Eastern States Exposition.
