North Carolina DECA

T Carl Brown Scholarship Program

North Carolina DECA members established a fund in the late sixties to honor T Carl Brown, former State Supervisor for Marketing Education, and to provide scholarships for Marketing Education students to continue their education. Many students, Marketing Education teachers, businesses, and individuals have continued to build the fund since that time.

The number of scholarships awarded each year will be determined by the amount of funds available for allocation and the number of students eligible (only the interest on the money in the scholarship account is awarded annually for T Carl Brown Scholarships).

Under the T Carl Brown Scholarship program, several additional scholarships are also awarded annually. They are given by specific companies/organizations for specific purposes.

Who is eligible?:

Any Marketing Education student who is a member of NC DECA, who is graduating high school, and who plans to prepare for a career in marketing or in teaching Marketing Education will be eligible to compete for T Carl Brown scholarships. The student may enter any post-secondary school of choice which prepares one for a career in marketing. This may be a technical institute, community college, a four-year college, university, or private vocational school.

The NC Marketing Education Board of Directors has established the number of applicants from a school is limited to no more than two per Marketing Education Coordinator in any year. A teacher may only recommend students in his/her classroom. Teachers cannot use the “slots” of colleagues to submit additional students. Scholarships are not renewable.

How recipients are selected:

Persons to receive scholarships are selected on the basis of merit by the NC DECA Scholarship Selection Committee. Obviously, persons must achieve in a manner which merits acceptance by the intended institution. Scores on standardized test, grades in high school courses required for college admission, as well as achievement in Workforce Development and leadership in NC DECA and community activities are considered.

Funds awarded:

The dollar amounts of scholarships are based on student need and the cost of the institution the student plans to enter. The Scholarship Committee decides the amount to be given for T Carl Brown Scholarship. Companies/organizations sponsoring scholarships designate the amount of their scholarships; the committee designates the amount of their scholarship; the committee designates the student recipients.

How funds are dispersed:

When a person is awarded a scholarship, the funds awarded are sent to the institution in which the student is enrolled and will be used to pay a part of expenses. No money is sent directly to an individual; thus, no funds will be spent on a person who does not actually attend an accredited institution. NC DECA reviews transcripts to ensure satisfactory performance before sending funds for future academic sessions.
