Just Some Thoughts………..

Are you ready for an exciting year? The Board has met and we are filled with ideas! We hope that you will all be excited about in participating in the activities with us. You can participate as a club or as an individual.
First, in August we had the Presidents’ Meeting. It was very well attended and everyone was very enthusiastic. I appreciate all the kind comments. I also want to thank the Board and the Trustees for all the work they did to make it so successful. The house looked beautiful, the flower arrangements were great and the food was wonderful!
In October we will have the District Meeting, the Plant/Garage/Book Sale and the Blue Star Memorial Dedication. Whew!

DISTRICT MEETING
The District 3 Meeting will be held on Thursday, October 6th at 9:30 at the Matthews Presbyterian Church.
This is a wonderful opportunity to meet with the Garden Club of North Carolina state officers to hear what they are doing in the state and what they can do for your club. We will also have a wonderful speaker who is going to explain how our garden can be our medicine cabinet. Club and Council Presidents will be giving us ideas of what their clubs do for programs and fundraisers. You will be receiving a lot of useful information if you join us.
The Council will not be meeting in September or October so this will be an opportunity to hear Council news also.

PROJECTS! PROJECTS! PROJECTS!
The Board has discussed doing some projects as a Council. This means that people from clubs could join the project as individuals if their club does not want to participate in the particular event. Perhaps we could make floral arrangements for a nursing home or similar facility, cards for the VA hospital, goodies for a facility, help with a public garden, do an educational program for an organization etc. We are looking for ideas and people to help do this. Do you have an idea? Do you know of an organization you would like to help? If you have an idea contact Shirley Dromms . What a great way to do something good and enjoy the fellowship of other gardeners.
GARAGE/PLANT/BOOK SALE
Yes, we are selling everything!!! (except clothing)
The sale will be held on Friday, October 14th for members only from 2:00 – 5:00, and on Saturday, October 15th from 8:00 – 1:00 for the public. Items need to be at the Council house by Thursday afternoon at 5:00. We will be sorting and pricing Friday morning.
Plant Sale: Fall is the best time to divide and plant and it also a good time to share with others. Divide your plants and bring them to the Council House. There will be a designated place by the ramp. The plant sale is always enhanced by garden tools, pots, statuary etc.
Garage/attic Sale: Fall is also a good time to clean out your home and simplify your life. Get rid of those things that have been sitting around for years and help the Council raise funds to support the Council House. Favorite items include jewelry, kitchen gadgets and pictures. Holiday items will go fast with the Thanksgiving and winter holidays only a month or two away. If we have enough items we will have a holiday boutique.
Book Sale: An added aspect this fall is a book sale. Please go through those books you have been meaning to pass on to friends or Goodwill. All sorts of books are welcome.

Thanks to those who have already signed up to work at the garage/plant/book sale. We are hoping to have more workers. It is enjoyable to work together to both bring in funds for council and house projects and to provide fun and useful items to neighbors and friends in Charlotte. BLUE STAR MEMORIAL DEDICATION
We are proud to announce that on October 29th at 10:00 we will be dedicating a Blue Star Memorial in conjunction with North Carolina DAR District III and in cooperation with the North Carolina Department of Transportation.Jill Rogers has been working very hard on making this happen and she needs your help to have a wonderful ceremony.
You are all invited to the dedication which will be held at the Welcome Center off route 77 North at mile marker 3 just after you leave South Carolina and enter North Carolina. The refreshments will be served after the dedication in the Crepe Myrtle grove to the left of the Center.
Thanks to those who have offered to help with the Blue Star Memorial.We still need people to bring refreshments and help plant the garden surrounding the memorial marker.If you would like to participate in making the dedication special, please call Jill Rogers at 704-441-5612.

The Garden Club of North Carolina Awards
Submission Deadline Dec. 1
There are many awards in the Award List for GCNC. At least one of them would cover work that your club, or a member of your club, is doing. Most of the awards are monetary. And what club can’t use more cash?
It is always a joy to hear the name of a Charlotte Council club called out as winner. Just ask Sardiswood who certainly took home lots of checks last year.
The awards list is in the NC Gardener, online at gardenclubofnc.org, or Judy Barnes will be glad to email them to you.
If you need assistance with deciding which award fits you or you need help with applying Judy will be glad to answer your questions.
All awards submitted to GCNC category chairmen are checked to see if they quality for a South Atlantic Region award or a National Garden Club Award.

Healthy Harvests
When: Thursday, October 6, 2016
Registration and coffee begins at 9:30am
Meeting will start promptly at 10am.

Directions: The church is located near the intersection of John and Trade Streets in downtown Matthews. On I-485 from either direction, take exit 52 and turn toward Matthews. Proceed about one mile to Matthews Presbyterian Church just past the intersection of John and Trade Streets.
Program: How you can grow your medicine cabinet in your garden. Ilissa Palmer, Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist with Fruit of the Spirit Nutrition and Wellness Center in Charlotte, will discuss how the foods you grow benefit your health.
Cost: $18 per person includes lunch catered by Beantown Restaurant in Matthews.

SARDISWOOD HOLIDAY GREENERY SALE 2016
Sardiswood Garden Club will again continue its tradition of offering you the best holiday greenery direct from the NC mountains. And, this year we are happy to also offer the spectacular Aphrodite amaryllis, a white, double bloom adorned with pink striations, petal tips and edges…a wonderful gift for you or to share with others during and after the holidays.
Proceeds from this sale are used to support our national award winning Snapdragon Junior Garden Club at Fletcher School, senior programs, and other Club projects relative to the principals of gardening and the conservation of the environment. Your support of this sale enables us to continue these projects… THANK YOU!
Our supplier needs our order as soon as possible so we ask that you send your order and check in on or before October 19.

Since our weather stays very warm so long into the fall, we try to delay the greenery shipment until after the mountains have a hard frost and the greenery goes dormant.

CARE TIPS Wreaths, sprays and roping used outside will need to be placed out of direct winter sun. It is helpful to give the greenery a water bath with a hose when received to revive it from being bundled during delivery. It can also be sprayed with Wilt Pruf, a product now available at most garden centers. If you are using the greenery for a table/mantel arrangement, check periodically and give it a water spray if it feels dry.
