Coming In Time

1.  Make wordless books.

2.  Make bead bracelets using large beads that can easily be strung on pipe cleaners. Give each child one “A” bead and one “C” bead as well as other plain beads.

3.  Make a bulletin board with Cubbies’ names and their fingerprints.

4.  Make crayon rubbings using the letters “A” and “C”.

5.  Make a Cubbie puppet using the Cubbie pattern at the front of the leader guide. You will need small paper bags, a Cubbie pattern for each child, crayons and glue. Have children color patterns, cut them out, and glue to the bag.

6.  Make a wordless bracelet with beads in the following colors: black, red, white, green, gold.

7.  Make a wordless worm with a tongue depressor and pompom balls (black, red, white, green, gold), wiggle eyes and a magnet.

8.  Make “A and C” booklet from patterns section (pattern 1).

9.  Copy “A” and “C” flashcards from pattern section onto cardstock. Cut in half horizontally. Have Cubbies color them and use them to learn verses (pattern 2).

Story Time

1.  A is for ”All have sinned” – Romans 3:23 – Have children help define sin.

2.  C is for “While we were sinners, Christ died for us” – Romans 5:8 – Explain the death of Christ.

3.  Use wordless book.

4.  Use cutout pictures from old Sunday School materials of people sinning.

5.  Who sins? Pass a mirror in front of each Cubbie. Ask, “Does Johnny sin?” etc.

6.  Make an “A” visual with a large A and stickers of people around it. Make a “C” visual with a large C and a picture of Christ and the cross.

Book Time

1.  Funny faces – Put flesh-colored felt inside an embroidery hoop. Have assorted face pieces with Velcro on them to attach to make faces.

2.  Color page with examples of children sinning.

3.  Draw an outline of the letters “A” and “C” using dots or dashes. Give to Cubbies and have them trace the outlines of the letters, and then color them.

4.  Make lacing cards in the shapes of “A” and “C” out of plastic canvas or cardstock and lace with shoelaces or plastic lacing.

5.  Color the “A and C” color sheet from the patterns section (pattern 3).

Play Time

1.  Have several sheets of paper with “A” or “C” printed on them taped to the floor. Play some music. When the music stops, tell all children to stand on either an “A” or a “C”. Then quote appropriate verses.

2.  Have 2 toy telephones. Leader uses one to call a child and give an instruction such as: jump 3x, hop on one foot, etc. Child does the movement and is given the phone to make the next call. Give everyone a turn.

3.  Bad News/Good News – When leader says “bad news”, Cubbies walk slowly around the circle repeating the “A” verse. When leader says “good news”, Cubbies skip around the circle, repeating the “C” verse.

4.  Beanbag Bucket – Have 4 buckets (red, blue, yellow, green) and line Cubbies up in 4 lines. Have them take turns throwing the beanbags in their team color bucket.

5.  Make 1” letter “A”’s on the computer and print on different colors of paper. Cut out. Do the same with the letter “C”. Have several dozen of each letter. Sprinkle around the game floor. Have two buckets, one labeled “A” and one labeled “C” and have the Cubbies sort the letters into the appropriate buckets.

6.  Variation of Spin the Bottle – Have the Cubbies sit in a circle, spin the bottle. Ask the Cubbie (that the bottle points to) Does ____ sin? Yes. Did Christ die for ____? Yes.

7.  Cut out an “A” and a “C” from stiff felt and place on the game floor. Have the Cubbies toss beanbags toward the letters. They repeat the appropriate verse depending on where their beanbag falls.

Snack Time

1.  Have “A” and “C” shaped cookies or rice krispies treats

2.  Snack with the colors of the wordless book (like jelly beans)

3.  Serve Apple juice boxes (A) and Cheerios (C)

4.  “A” and “C” shaped jell-o jigglers

5.  Alphabet cereal

1.  Oh Be Careful Little Eyes What You See – after each verse, talk about how you can sin with that body part (hands – hitting a friend, etc).

Getting to Know You Night

Coming In Time

1.  Musical instruments:

a.  Horns - cardboard tubes with a piece of waxed paper secured to one end with a rubber band

b.  Shakers - Styrofoam cups with beans in them

c.  Guitars - shoeboxes with rubber bands around them

d.  Tambourines - paper plates stapled together with beans between them

2.  “God Made” glasses (pattern 4) - Pre-cut glasses out of poster board. Using pattern cut a cellophane insert. Let Cubbies decorate glasses with fingerprints from a washable inkpad. Tape cellophane to backside of glasses. Then tape extended ends together to fit around child’s head. When you put on your glasses, what do you see that God made?

3.  Trash-collection bottles - Clean 2-liter soda bottles. Cut an oval shape hole near the top of the bottle (approx 2 ¼ “ by 4”) with exacto knife. Print labels saying “Help Keep God’s World Clean” and put on bottle. Let Cubbies add creation stickers to bottle. Go outside for playtime and collect trash.

4.  Heart Frame Mask – For each child, cut the center out of a paper plate. This will be the base for the mask. Cut a 1-½” wide strip from red 12”x18” construction paper. Staple one end of strip to the rim of plate. Measure around child’s head and staple other side to fit. Make a heart out of 12x18 paper. Fold and cut out heart. Place rim on one side of heart and trace hole. Cut out the hole. Write “Jesus loves...” on top of heart. Decorate with heart stickers or marker. Glue heart to rim.

5.  Play with play dough and heart shaped cookie cutters.

6.  Take 2-inch wooden hearts and with a white crayon, write “God is Love” on it (this is done beforehand) and then when Cubbies arrive they can paint the hearts red and the words will magically show up. Attach magnets to the back.

Book Time

1.  Copy picture of lamb with today’s verse on it for Cubbies to color (pattern 5).

2.  Use color sheet in lesson plan; add pipe cleaner staff, sheep stickers and cotton balls for sheep.

3.  Make crayon rubbings of cardboard sheep (pattern 5).

4.  Glue a paper heart on a Popsicle stick and write the verse on it.

5.  Glue Fruit Loops or put dot stickers on outline of each Cubbies’ name.

Play Time

1.  Play shepherd by dressing up with props.

2.  Play shepherd by finding stuffed sheep hidden around room.

3.  Play “Duck, Duck, Goose” substituting the words “God Is Love”. Chase on “love.”

4.  “Gather the Sheep” – sweep cotton balls (sheep) into sheep pen (hula hoop) by waving a paper plate or rolled up newspaper.

5.  “Catch a Sheep” – Line up sheep (Cubbies) at one end of room. Shepherds (leaders) catch a sheep as they all run by. Put the caught sheep in the sheep pen (center of game circle or encircled rope).

6.  Musical chairs – March around the circle. When the music stops, the Cubbie who lands on a lamb sticker (laminated sticker on ground) gets a lamb stamp on their hand.

7.  Shepherd, Shepherd, Where’s Your Lamb? – Play like Doggie, Doggie, Where’s Your Bone? Put lamb sticker on a small plastic chip.

8.  Use flannels and put the shepherd in the field (used during story time). Play like “pin the tail on the donkey” only have Cubbie place his lamb closest to the shepherd.

9.  Guess Who I Am – Remove 3-4 Cubbies from the room, cover 1 with a bed sheet, come back in room asking who am I? Take turns until all have a chance to play. Option: all Cubbies close their eyes, 1 Cubbie is tapped and says who am I – others try to guess his voice.

Snack Time

1.  Heart shaped cookies or Rice Krispies bars

Fun

Dress as a shepherd or wear lamb ears. When Cubbies come in and ask why you are dressed that way, say, “listen to our story tonight to find out.”

Light Night

Creation of heavens, earth, light and dark

God is everlasting: He made light and dark

Coming In Time

1.  Glue torn pieces of blue and yellow paper onto a paper plate to show light and dark.

2.  Make a chart (one per team). Divide poster board in half – have a white side and a dark side. Cut out pictures from magazines showing things to do in the light or dark. Glue to appropriate side.

3.  Glue ½ circle of black onto a paper plate. Write the Bible verse on the white side.

4.  Draw with white chalk on black construction paper.

5.  Put a glob of thick, white tempera paint in the middle of a black piece of construction paper. Lay the paper in a box. Cubbies blow paint around with a straw (make sure they don’t suck). OR move paint around by rolling marbles through it. Sprinkle paint with glitter.

6.  Creation Book (this is an ongoing craft for Bear Hugs 2-6)

a.  Use 8 ½” x 11” cardstock for each page, punch holes and bind with yarn. Cover says Cubbie’s name and “Book about Creation.”

b.  Inside cover: The Bible verse “In the beginning God…” with the days of creation listed.

c.  First Day Page – Sheet of white cardstock. Kids cut a sheet of black construction paper in half and glue it on.

d.  Second Day Page – Glue blue saran wrap on bottom of white page, cotton balls on top half of page for waters below/waters (clouds) above.

e.  Third Day Page – Glue sand to bottom of page for dry land. Add tree, plant and flower cutouts or stickers.

f.  Fourth Day Page – Cut out a sun, moon, and stars to glue on.

g.  Fifth Day Page – Cut out birds and fish to glue on, glue more blue saran wrap on top of fish for water.

h.  Sixth Day Page – Use digital camera to take pictures of kids and print them on white cardstock. Cut out animals and glue around pictures. God created them, too!

i.  Seventh Day Page – Glue a picture of the earth on the page with the verse “And God saw that what He had created was good, so…God rested.”

Story Time

1.  Make a creation wheel. Directions at www.families-first.com/kids/ross6.htm

2.  Cut pictures out of magazines to show actions we do during the day and night.

Book Time

1.  Glue a set of pictures with activities from day and night on the inside of a file folder. On the outside in an attached pocket, have a set of matching pictures. The Cubbies can sort and match the pictures.

2.  Take a piece of poster board and divide in half. Put pictures of activities from day and night on the left side, and matching pictures on the right side in random order. Insert a brad into each picture. Tie yarn around brads on the left. Cubbies match pictures by wrapping the yarn from the picture on the left to the matching picture on the right.

Play Time

1.  Make a sun card and a moon card for each Cubbie; have a bag with nighttime things (toothbrush, bed time story, p.j.’s, etc.) and daytime things (school book, ball, toys, breakfast food). As you pull out each item, the Cubbies must find a sun for a daytime item and a moon for a nighttime item.

2.  Shadow play – bring in an overhead projector and let the Cubbies make shadows on the wall.

3.  Cubbies choose a partner, blindfold one and let them be led by the seeing partner…take off the blindfold and shout “God made light!”

4.  Put black or white dot stickers (one per Cubbie) in a large circle on the floor. March to some lively music. When music stops, Cubbies on black dots run to the wall with a sheet of black construction paper taped on it. Cubbies on white dots run to the wall with a sheet of white construction paper taped to it.

5.  Flashlight games.

6.  Stop and Go – hold up a white card and Cubbies move, like they do during the day. Hold up the black card and Cubbies lie down to sleep, like at night.

7.  Flashlight Freeze – Cubbies stand in one spot and wiggle (hop, wave, etc). Leaders shine flashlight on several Cubbies who have to freeze (stop) and sit down.

8.  Day and Night Game – Play ball for the “day” game, and have a “pillow fight” using cotton balls for the “night” game.
