A Note from the President!

I am going to start out with a sad note. Our trials bring us all together and this year we said goodbye to a volunteer that many people knew and loved, Craig Saylan. I only knew Craig a few years, but he had such a huge heart and love for animals! He loved to be the leash runner at our Agility Trials, and he was a pro! Craig is now watching over our trials and our pups have welcomed him as he crossed over that rainbow bridge! Thank You Craig for being such a kind and helpful person!
We are full swing into trial season! The herding trial brought us some chilly weather, but at least it wasn’t being run through thick fog or rain! We lucked out for the most part in the weather department! I never thought in a million years that I would be in a pen with 5 sheep pushing them down the “chute” to get into the arena for an anxious Border Collie to do its job. This is one trial that I look forward to oddly enough because we get to see a dog do a job it is bred to do, its fun!
Thank You to Gerianne Darnell for the continued use of her land and stock for the Herding Trial. The judges, exhibitors and volunteers always have a good time. Thank You to those that helped on Thursday with tarps and hole filling as well as working during the trial; Alberta Gray, Linda Puckett, Kim Embrey, Trisha Burbach, Deb Landon, Randy Frady, John Wilson, Fen Danielson, and finally Peggy Battig for hosting lunch in the much warmer obedience kitchen! If I missed anyone my apologies, but to everyone…Thank You!
This past weekend of May 7th, 8th and 9th we hosted our first Agility trial! Thank You John Wilson for meeting me on Thursday as we pulled out most of the jumps which set us up well for an excellent trial. Karen Nenow, our new Trial Secretary did a fantastic job and thanks to Amanda Mohler and Linda Puckett for helping her out through the weekend. Also, Alberta Gray, had a hand or two in helping Karen out! The weather left a little to be desired; however, we can’t complain too much as it rained AFTER the trial was over! I had the tough job of placing volunteers all weekend to work in the rings. It was tough, but we pulled it off with the help of many different people. HUGE THANKS to Randy Frady, John Wilson, Mark Larson, Dave Landon and Steve Lawrence for multiple course buildings!
There are so many more people to thank both inside the club and outside the club. I wish I could name everyone, but then this article would get very long, and I was going to try and keep it shorter. Please take an opportunity to pat yourselves on the back ALL of you that helped this weekend and accept my THANK YOU! Keep the CPE/UKC weekend open in June as I’ll put the call out for help soon!
If you have vouchers that expired in November of 2009, you may still use them up to July 1st, 2010 on clothing if you wish! I am going to make an attempt to pick out major items like t-shirts and sweatshirts that have been ordered in the past to have some on hand to choose from. If you would like to purchase something, get your vouchers together and bring them with you to the CPE/UKC trial in June and we’ll get it going!
BDOC Board Meeting February 17, 2009

The meeting was called to order on Wed., April 8 at 6:45 p.m. by President Erin Embry at the Summer Kitchen in Bellevue, NE. Michelle Foutch, Dean Lee, Marlene Lee, Dee Nelson, John Wilson, Connie Byrnes, Erin Embry and Nora Boyd were present. Staci Miller was absent.
John W. moved to waive the reading of the last meeting’s minutes as they were published in the last newsletter. Dee seconded the motion

a. Connie proposed changing the club accounts to a bank that is available in both NE and IA (First National?) John moved to allow Connie to choose a new bank. Michelle seconded and all approved.

a. Pricing: business card size = $10, ¼ pg. $15, ½ pg. $25 full pg. $45. Sherry Rife will be the contact for ad space. Ads will be approved at the discretion of the board. There will be a disclaimer denying liability for vendors. John moved to accept and Connie seconded the motion. All approved.
3. Therapy Dog Opportunity by Dee Nelson
a. Fox Run Retirement Home in Council Bluffs: members could come in to visit residents with dogs. This is not necessarily a club function, but an opportunity for members. It will be discussed more at the next general meeting

BDOC Memorial Veteran Parade

This is the 2nd year BDOC has offered the Geraldine Forristall Memorial Veteran Parade to honor the Veteran Agility Dog. On Saturday, May 8, at the Spring AKC agility trial we had 13 Teams entered in the parade.
The Club agreed to change the name to honor the memory of Geraldine Forristall. Gerri was an inspiration to all of us. Hopefully we will have Spike entered in next years Parade.
The Veterans course was three tunnels circled around the ring with the table in the middle. There were 2 dogs in the parade that were entered in the regular agility trial and therefore could not do the course, but they were out there showing their stuff!
After completing the course, we were honored to have Gerald Forristall hand the rosette to the handler and our President, Erin Embrey handed out the certificates.
This is always an emotional time, a time to honor the dogs in the parade, a time to remember those dogs no longer with us and a time to remember handlers that have gone before us. For a brief time, time reversed as we remembered all the good times and the hard work and the thrill of that first Q.

Linda Puckett entered Stormy, Solid Gold Eye of the Storm, CD RAE NA NAJ NP OJP
Linda wrote about Stormy, Storm is a great all-around dog! He has decided after 8 ½ years that agility is fun and there is a great competition between he and his little sister! Last year he finally finished his NA title and followed it with an NAP on the Standard course.
He loves rally, obedience and finished his RAE title this year. He enjoys tracking and also tries his best to herd whenever the opportunity presents its self!!
Most of all, he will go to the end of the earth with me and this bond will never be broken. He loves long walks, rides in the car, massages and chasing squirrels and bunnies.
He is the best lap warmer and listener that I will ever have! He is my “heart dog”!

Riva has been a busy girl in her almost eleven years of life. She earned her first title, TD at the age of 8 months, and now at almost eleven she is working on her Tracking Championship in her quest to become a Quintuple Champion.
Riva was the third dog in AKC history to earn a Quadruple Championship. She is a conformation champion, an agility champion, a herding champion, and an obedience champion. She is a multiple High in Trial dog in both obedience and herding, and one of the few dogs to be awarded the “Versatile Champion” title by the Border Collie Society of America.
But, more importantly, Riva is a loved and cherished pet. She is rarely more than ten feet away from Gerianne’s side. Together they have spent thousands of hours training and competing, but their favorite thing to do together is just hang out and go for walks. Riva also rules over the two Border Collie boys in her household. May she live forever!

Raymond has been a tough luck kid. At the age of four months he got his feet caught in the slats of a lawn chair, which eventually resulted in several surgeries when he was two years old. Surgery was followed by rehab, chiropractic, massage, pulsed signal therapy, acupuncture, the list goes on and on and it continues today! That Ray became a Dual Champion Utility Dog and is still competing in dog sports at the age of 9 years is a testament to his courage, tenacity, and heart (and it is also a testament to his owner’s pocketbook”!
Ray does everything with extreme gusto, including flying spit. He enjoys watching dog sports almost as much as he does participating. All of Raymond’s titles were earned after his surgeries, and in 2004 he was retired from agility to concentrate on herding, obedience, and tracking. Ray also produced a litter of four puppies in 2004, three of which are working on the MACH titles. Raymond’s eleven grandchildren all show tremendous promise in working dog sports.
Now retired from obedience and herding, Raymond will continue training and showing in tracking and rally. He puts a smile on Gerianne’s face every day.

Bungee is 8 ½ years old. I love this little fellow so much that he can do pretty much what ever he wants. He was born in England and was flown to Florida. When Bungee was 7 months old, I drove to Florida one hot July summer to pick him up from his show home. Bungee decided early in his agility career, he would prefer to stand at the top of the A-Frame and survey his domain. The crowd loved it, his team mate did not. He also did no appreciate the teeter. But give him a toy and he will run up and down the A-Frame and ride the teeter to the ground. He believes if he has to work, he is entitled to instant rewards. So typical of a Shih Tzu.
Connie Byrnes entered Joshua, but due to a family illness had to miss the parade.

As a puppy, Josh was introduced to obedience, tracking, herding and agility. He picked agility so I learned how to handle him. If I had more experience and ability, Josh would have received more titles. Now 10 years old, Josh lived up to his name “Never a Dull Moment”. Two years ago, he took off after some deer after dark. It was the middle of the winter. Many people looked for him in the wild hills and the neighborhoods. After 6 weeks he was found living in an apple orchard. Now he loves life at home doing all his activities with me and his house brothers. He still thinks agility is the best.

Icy finished her last two legs for her Novice Fast title and earned two legs towards her Open Jumpers title at our agility trial on Mothers Day weekend. Three first places and one second isn't too shabby for her first time out since her surgery. I was thrilled with my Mothers Day gift from her :-) :-) We are having so much fun !!!

BDOC Herding Trial, April 24-25, 2010

The Sixth Annual BDOC Herding Trial was another big success. We had 29 entries each day, three were duck entries and the rest were sheep. The weather was better than it has been in recent years, still a little chilly and a smattering of rain, but it was a vast improvement over last year! Our judges again this year were Kent and Lori Herbel, and our trial secretary was Sharon Johnson. Sharon did a great job and we can only hope she is available next year. Members who helped fill holes, put up tarps, run sheets, put out lunch, scribe, time, and/or duck and sheep wrangle were John Wilson, Erin Embry, Alberta Gray, Linda Puckett, Gerianne Darnell, Fen Danielson, Deb Landon, Dave Landon, Randy Frady, Darwin Baker, Peggy Battig, Sue Volkmer, Trish Burback, and Kim Embry. Thanks again to all of you!
BDOC AKC Agility Trial, May 7-9, 2010 by Gerianne Darnell
We had another wonderful three-day AKC agility trial at the Nebraska Humane Society. This year we were on Mothers Day weekend, but the good news is we were NOT on the same weekend as the Bershire Hathaway Stockholders meeting, and our entry was significantly higher than in past years. We also had another wonderful Veterans Agility Parade, chaired by Alberta Gray. We made a large profit, the exact numbers will be at our next meeting. The weather was fine, a little soggy on Friday, but given that it POURED on the Monday after the trial, we were most certainly lucky with regards to the weather. NHS was supposed to have major renovations going on, but those had been postponed so we also had the full use of the facility. The judge was Arlyn Sigeti from Chicago. A special thanks to John Wilson and Erin Embrey for setting up on Thursday night. Members who helped scribe, time, deal with and serve the food, run errands, work at the secretary’s table, set up the rings, transport the judge, build courses, gate steward, and all of the dozens of jobs it takes to put on an event like this were Erin Embry, Michelle Foutch, Randy Frady, Deb Landon, Mark Larson, John Wilson, Kim Embrey, Lucy Hulse, Amanda Mohler, Rose Strasser, Trisha Burbach, Dave Landon, Linda Puckett, Gerianne Darnell, Alberta Gray, Larry Max, and Mary Max. We also had many non-members and a couple of prospective members helping out. Thanks to all of you who helped put on another successful event.
