Aim:

  • To deliver sessions in a practical discipline extending beyond our current offer of construction (plastering, tiling & painting and decorating) and catering and hospitality to complement the technical skills offer. This could include, but is not confined to, barbering, hair, nails and makeup, horticulture, bike maintenance, car valeting and furniture restoration etc to homeless and vulnerably housed people
  • Under the general direction of theSkills Coordinator, to plan, organise and deliver teaching in the specialist area

Dimensions

  • Deliver approximately 5 hours of teaching per week to groups at various outreach venues
  • Support and coordinate volunteers as required within sessions

Circumstances

  • Some evening and weekend work may be required
  • Based in the centre of Liverpool with services delivered in partners’ facilities across Merseyside and so access to transport is essential.
  • Crisis Skylight Merseyside run three twelve week terms and a summer school each year
  • A satisfactory enhanced disclosure from the Disclosure &Barring Service is required for this role. Crisis Skylight also works with young people aged 16 and 17 and so the DBS check will establish the successful applicant’s suitability to work with children as well as vulnerable adults

Salary

  • £20.55 per hour

Background

Crisis is the national charity for homeless people. We are determined to end homelessness. We do it person by person and by influencing policies to ensure everyone has a place to call home.

Crisis offers ground breaking housing, health, education and employment services. We work with thousands of homeless people across the UK every in. Education is at the heart of Crisis – supporting people to build knowledge and skills, grow in confidence and feel more positive about the future.

In Merseyside, Skylight services are delivered on an outreach basis in existing homeless and community facilities. Partners are based in Liverpool, Knowsley, Sefton, Wirral and St. Helens.

The Role

The Technical skills tutor will be responsible for supporting and delivering a range of practical sessions to clients on an outreach basis. We are looking for a tutor with a background in practical skills which could include; barbering, hair, nails and makeup, horticulture, bike maintenance, car valeting and furniture restoration etc. The sessions delivered each term reflect the needs of learners, and may change as required. Where appropriate, the Technical Skills Tutor will support clients to gain an accreditation to reflect their achievements. Currently we offer accreditation through Open Awards/NOCN.

Principal accountabilities

Recruitment and assessment

  • Recruit and select learners on the basis of need
  • Undertake initial and formative assessment of learners, and respond accordingly
  • Create and administer assessments which inform the development of training & learning plans taking into account individual needs, styles and interests
  • Deliver a range of training and assessment activities

Teaching and learning support

  • Teach and support learning in accordance with best practice for the client group
  • Plan, reflect and review each learner’s programme on a regular basis
  • Prepare and use suitable and good quality learning materials
  • Prepare schemes of work and lesson plans in accordance with standard practice
  • Establish and maintain standards of conduct with and for the learners
  • Identify resources and networking opportunities for training, education or work relevant to the client support plan
  • Adhere to organisational policies when dealing with aggressive or challenging behaviour

Certification and quality assurance

  • Assess, record and report on the development, progress and attainment against the standards set for the programme
  • Contribute to the development of Crisis Skylight Merseyside quality assurance systems
  • Make and keep appropriate assessment records
  • Liaise as required with internal verifiers and representatives of awarding bodies
  • Maintain and provide required records for accountability purposes
  • Source and maintain accreditation portfolios and associated paperwork
  • Compile and maintain member records in line with audit procedures maintaining member confidentiality at all times
  • Ensure that any safeguarding concerns are identified and reported in line with Crisis procedures

Contribution to the team and organisation

  • Develop and share teaching and learning materials with the team
  • Participate in the continual improvement of resources, learning environments and delivery of effective teaching methods and styles
  • Participate in professional development activities
  • Promote well-being and development of the organisation internally and externally
  • Preserve good professional relationships with other individuals and agencies
  • Support and manage volunteers as required within the practical skills sessions

General accountabilities

  • Actively encourage and support member involvement within Crisis
  • Develop and maintain an understanding of Crisis’ work and the needs and circumstances of homeless people.
  • Comply with Crisis policies and procedures, including Health and Safety policies, for which all employees owe a duty of care both to themselves and others, in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act
  • Carry out duties that may reasonably be required in the light of the main purpose of the job.

Person specification

Essential skills, knowledge and experience

  1. To hold, be working towards, or be willing to acquire an appropriate adult teaching qualification
  2. Recent industry experience and experience of delivering a technical activityideally with vulnerable clients either in a community or adult education setting
  3. Plan and deliverlessons, monitor student progress and provide regular feedback and assessment for accredited and non-accredited courses
  4. Teach effectively across the ability range with an ability to develop some of own learning materials to support delivery of practical sessions
  5. Keep accurate and up to date records, sharing information as appropriate
  6. Work with people with challenging behaviour and/or complex needs and to lead groups in an informal but structured way
  7. Work both on your own and with a wider team both internally and externally, making appropriate referrals to support the members’ progressionand a willingness to reflect upon and develop own practice
  8. A passion for learning, creativity and innovation
  9. A willingness to undertake training as required
  10. Access to own transport with ability to travel throughout Merseyside
  11. Knowledge of and ability to comply with safeguarding procedures
