Summary:

Engage the public throughthe existing Gatos de Santa Fe program, as well as a new program called “Mi Perro es Familia”, canvassing neighborhoods to identify needs, and participate in event outreach. The members of the Community Outreach department go out into the community, as well as phone and email communication. Because this department is new, this job description and the duties contained in it will change as the department develops.

Job Duties:

Gatos de Santa Fe

Working in the field to trap feral cats:

. identifying trapping locations, communicating with home owners, calling clinics to arrange s/n, and

pickingcats up the next day and returning to site

Logging trapping data into Chameleon, and Excel spreadsheets

Logging data from the Satellite clinic into Chameleon

Clearly communicating information about the Gatos de Santa Fe program to the public through canvassing and outreach projects

Building strong relationships with the public and fellow shelter employees.

Cleaning and caring for the Gatos equipment and Gatos van

Mi Perro es Familia

Working with the department supervisor to identifying areas within Santa Fe where community outreach is needed

Going door-to- door to talk to the community about any issues regarding their dogs or dogs in the neighborhood

Problem-solving with dog owners to assist them in getting their animals spayed and neutered, identifying any other services they may need for their dogs, and determining if the shelter can help them (the scope of which will be decided on a case by case basis)

Clearly communicating information about the program to the public through canvassing and outreach projects

Building strong relationships with the public and fellow shelter employees.

General

Communicate effectively with the public, staff, and management in both writing and speaking

Ability to safely handle cash/check donations from the public and return them to the Accounting office

Ability to safely drive shelter vehicles

Ability to perform maintenance, cleaning, and general care of the Gatos equipment

High degree of time-management skills

Ability to work with limited supervision

High level of independent decision-making required

Ability to work with volunteers in a respectful manner

Requirements:

Must be 18 years of age or older

Spanish speaking a plus

Must have a valid driver’s license and pass a DMV check

Must be comfortable speaking with the public

Possess knowledge regarding shelter operations

Promote a positive attitude and image regarding the Shelter and its practices, both within the shelter and to the public.

Ability to work with a wide range of people in sometimes emotionally charged situations

The ability to demonstrate active listening skills, provide empathy to community members, and quickly assess situations

Ability to be professional when encountering situations in which you may not agree

Regular and timely attendance is required

Position is physically demanding often working over rough terrain. The position requires repetitive motion; standing and walking, reaching and bending, in addition to the ability to regularly move & transport cats and their traps.

Knowledge of Chameleon and spreadsheets, or the ability to easily learn both

Job Environment:

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Exposure to cat odor, noise, allergens and some cleaning chemicals

Ability to remain outdoors for long periods of time during heat and cold
