Purpose of the New Role:

The successful candidatewilldesign, synthesise and characterise low-coordinate organometallic complexes in order to explore their structure, bonding, and reactivity.

Main Responsibilities / % time per year
1. / Develop methods for the preparation of new low-coordinate transition metal complexes. Characterisation of these materials by spectroscopic techniques and X-ray crystallography. / 30%
2. / Explore the reactions of the target molecules with a range of substrates. / 30%
3. / Undergraduate tutorials and laboratory demonstrating. / 10%
4. / Engage in the daily supervision of graduate students. / 10%
5. / Contribute to the maintenance and smooth running of the synthetic laboratory, as required. / 5%
6. / Write scientific articles and present work at meetings. / 5%
7. / Liaise with academic and industrial collaborators as appropriate. / 5%
8. / You may be asked to perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role. / 5%

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential / Desirable
Qualifications/ Education / Demonstrate excellence in synthetic organometallic chemistry.
BSc and MSc/Sci/Phil, or equivalent.
PhD in chemistry. / A track record of high quality publications and presentations in meetings.
Skills/Training / Demonstrate excellence in synthetic organometallic chemistry.
Reactivity studies of target compounds.
In-depth knowledge and experience of the application of Schlenk line, glove-box, and general anaerobic chemistry techniques.
NMR, FTIR, and UV/Vis/NIR absorption spectroscopies.X-ray crystallography.
Proven ability to work independently as well as part of a team. / Abilityto play a leading role in research group in developing independent research pathways.
Experience / Experience in organometallic chemistry.
Proven track record in characterising molecular compounds.
Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills. / A track record of published research in quality journals and presentations in meetings.

Decision Making

Synthetic work within a target area, general low-level spend on grant codes for consumables.

ii)taken in collaboration with others

Expensive (ca>100GBP) purchases.

iii)referred to the appropriate line manager by the role holder
