TASK/PROCEDURE / HAZARD / SAFE PROCEDURE
Chemical parts washers are typically found in auto repair shops and equipment repair shops where cleaning oil, grease, and dirt from parts in necessary for proper repair. There are many hazards associated with a chemical parts washer that must be fully understood before attempting use. Failure to follow required safety precautions can result in serious disabling injury or death. / Respiratory illness/failure due to inhalation of toxic vapors and/or fumes
Illness and injury resulting from contact and/or absorption with chemical solvent
Muscle strain and/or sprain from pushing, pulling, lifting heavy parts
Skeletal injuries to the neck and spine, as well as other parts of the body, resulting from improper lifting procedures and/or improper body position
Slips, Trips, and Falls due to slippery floor, unstable footing, obstacles on the floor
Cuts and abrasion to hands and fingers from sharp edges
Flammable liquids / Adequate training is required before for attempting to use the chemical parts washer. Training must include lecture and practical demonstration
Read and understand precautions listed on the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
Inspect to insure safe operating condition
Use all personal safety equipment (PPE) required on the MSDS such as eye and face protection, respirator, chemical/cut resistant gloves, chemical apron, chemical resistant footwear
Only use the chemical parts washer in a well ventilated area
Never use the chemical parts washer near hot works operations, sparks, or open flame
Never add highly flammable liquids such as gasoline to the solvent
Ensure there is adequate fire extinguisher nearby
Follow proper lifting procedures when lifting parts and material. Use your legs, not your back
Keep the floor around the washer clear of debris and other tripping hazards
Pay attention and take your time
