Maintenance Assistant / Saint Ronan’s School
JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title / Maintenance Assistant
Salary / By negotiation
Location / Saint Ronan’s School, Water Lane, Hawkhurst, Kent. TN18 5DJ
Hours of work / Monday – Friday
8am – 5pm
The role requires event support and weekend working as and when required
Responsible to / Maintenance Manager

  • Permanent, Full Time
  • Subject to 6 month probationary Period

Role Summary / To ensure an effective and efficient operation of maintenance work within the Saint Ronan’s School Estate as required

Key Responsibilities, Tasks and Activities /
  • To assist with the maintenance, upkeep and refurbishment of the estate, premises and contents of the School as required
  • To interpret, plan and work from verbal instruction, scales drawings, specifications and schedules
  • To perform a wide range of work practices and trade skills within the concept of flexible multi skilled working
  • To learn new skills, techniques and practices for various trades, health and safety and grounds maintenance
  • To attend and participate in training and development programmes relevant to the post and as directed by the Maintenance Manager
  • To assist and carry out works within the departments planned maintenance schedule as required
  • To work as a team member accepting and offering advice and guidance as necessary
  • To carry out all duties with the guidelines of the School’s Health and Safety Policy
  • Carry out proactive and reactive remedial works covering all aspects of building, grounds and product maintenance
  • Plan and carry out preventative maintenance work under the direction of your line manager
  • Liaise with your line manager to ensure that suitable material is ordered before you start a project
  • Liaise with your line manager to ensure that tools and equipment are suitable, sufficient and fit for purpose
  • Carry out routine maintenance and testing for complete records for equipment provided for safety, fire-fighting and safe evacuation
  • Carry out minor plumbing, internal and external drainage and gutter repairs and the removal of blockages in sanitary ware
  • Carry out planned decorative work and reactive decorative repair works as directed by the Maintenance Manager
  • Carry out grounds maintenance and reactive grounds repair works as directed by the Maintenance Manager
  • Carry out minor carpentry and masonry repairs to the fabric of the building as directed by the Maintenance Manager
  • Carry out portaging duties and assist with the removal and fitting of office and classroom furniture as directed by the Maintenance Manager
  • To carry out and comply with risk assessments for all significant risk associated with the activities of the position and the School
  • Assist with the removal and safe management of all waste and comply with any recycling and environmental initiatives introduced by the School
  • Maintain a smart appearance at all times wearing facilities clothing provided and act as an ambassador for the Facilities team
  • To work with your line manager to identify any training and development needs and actively seek out improvement opportunities as well as undertaking professional development as required by the School
  • To comply with all School policies and procedures and undertake training as required
  • To safeguard the wellbeing of children at the School, including responsibility for reporting any child protection matters to the Schools Child Protection Coordinator
  • Any other duties commensurate with the level and grade of the post that the School may reasonably require

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Experience /
  • Due to the varied nature of the work there is no preference for a particular trade. The nature of the buildings on the estate means that a wide variety of skills are required in the course of any given day. The ideal candidate would have a good all round knowledge of general building techniques and a large smattering of common sense.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and relationship management
  • Needs experience of H&S requirement including risk assessments and method statement
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety, particularly moving and handing techniques, and COSHH assessments

Skills & Qualifications /
  • Good written and verbal communication skills are essential
