James E. Roberts Award

The James E. Roberts Award annually recognizes outstanding contributions by Caltrans registered engineers to the field of transportation structures. Mr. Roberts served as a structural engineer and manager for over half a century, including fifteen years as California’s State Bridge Engineer. He spearheaded Caltrans’ $4.5 billion seismic retrofit program and oversaw nearly $50 million in seismic research projects. He was named to the National Academy of Engineering in 1996; the only state employed engineer to be so honored. Mr. Roberts retired in 2001 as Chief Deputy Director.

ELIGIBILITY:

Nominees for the James E. Roberts Structure Engineering Award must be a Principle Engineer or below at the time of nomination. Nominations will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Former employees on contract or working as retired annuitants are not eligible.

GENERAL CRITERIA:

Nominees must have made a major contribution to the field of transportation. The contribution may represent either a lifetime of accomplishment in the field or a single extraordinary achievement.

DEADLINE:

Entries must be received by close of business Monday, March 7, 2016.

SCORING CRITERIA:

·  Contribution to the field of transportation engineering and California’s transportation program management

·  Contributions to the field of transportation management through effective and exemplary leadership

·  Innovation in design, process, procedure and/or standards

·  Publications, papers, presentations and/or affiliations

·  Public benefits derived from individual’s area of responsibility

Nominations will be reviewed and winners selected by a panel of judges representative of the varied disciplines that this award honors. The award will be presented at the California Transportation Foundation’s annual transportation awards banquet in Sacramento on May 25, 2016.

Applications must include:

·  A completed entry form.

·  A typewritten statement, 2 pages or less (with font no less than 12 points), describing the outstanding achievement or contribution made by the nominee to the transportation program in California based on the scoring criteria.
