SOME WAYS THESE COURSES ARE DIFFERENT

1. Public Achievement Thursdays at Dakota Meadows Middle School

The reason for you need permission to register is that you need to know what you are getting into. These courses are unusual in several ways. Students will both study and practice democratic citizen activism. Specifically, each student will serve as a citizenship coach for a team of young teens in the Public Achievement program at Dakota Meadows Middle School. You will help the young people work as a team on their choice of issue or problem. Your grade does not depend on how much the team accomplishes. For more information see the Public Achievement web page, linked to Kunkel’s Home page at http://krypton.mnsu.edu/~jak3

2. Two Courses must be taken together

Tuesday we will meet in an MSU classroom from 12:30 pm - 1:45 pm for the more academic side of the experience. On Thursdays we will go to Dakota Meadows Middle School (DMMS) for Public Achievement coaching. You must keep the hours 1:00 pm - 3:45 pm on Thursdays open both semesters. This includes time for transportation

2. Year Long Commitment

If you take these courses in the Fall you are making a commitment to retake the courses in the spring. Because you will be working with a team of middle school students on some issue, we need your involvement all year. We will do several weeks of orientation and preparation in the fall. That will not leave enough meetings during fall semester for the teams to get organized and active. Your relationship with the issue team will continue through spring semester.

3. At least one Mandatory Saturday Event

Students must participate in our local training workshop, probably on Saturday September 10. Students may be requested to participate in one PA event in the Twin Cities over the year, or do an alternative assignment.

5. Background Check will be required

We will do this in the fall.
