Discussion (questions h & i)

Together, each group will write up the purpose, predictions, materials and procedures for Parts I to III; one copy will be handed in per group. However, each person will need to complete their own observations, analysis and discussion questions for ALL three parts of the lab. All group and individual parts will be handed in as one package.

Factors Affecting the Rate of Enzyme Activity

Things to keep in mind for your experimental design:

Assay: A filter paper square coated with the enzyme is dropped into

a small beaker of substrate (hydrogen peroxide). Make sure

the square is placed at the bottom of the beaker with

forceps.

Part I

Temperature : Both the enzyme and substrate must be at the

designated temp. prior to the assay.

Choose significant temperatures based on predictions and

background knowledge. (more than 3 points are recommended)

PartII / III

pH and Concentration only require 3 points.

Overall : The time it takes for the filter paper to rise is an

indication of the rate of enzyme activity.

The rate of reaction = 1/time or 1/seconds

i.e. The shorter the time the faster the reaction.

Remember that your procedure must be clear and repeatable

based on your outline.

Written Requirement:

Parts I, II and III should be written up separately .

Follow the requirement outlined on pgs 82-83 (f), (g), (h) and (i) for the analysis.

Only one of the three parts will be evaluated, and the other two parts will be given a completion mark.

The decision of which part will be evaluated will be chosen randomly after the lab has been handed in.
