Introduction to Immunology (Biol 321)

1.  Purpose of the course: to give students an understanding of not only HOW the immune system works, but also WHY the immune system functions in the manner in which it does.

1)  Directions to Dr. Cramer’s office:

a.  My office is on the 8th floor of the Mary Ellen Jones Building (MEJB). MEJB is on the west corner of West St. and Manning Dr. opposite the Dental School and caddy-corner from the hospital.

b.  My office is in room 822D. Enter the front of the building! When you exit the elevator, turn RIGHT and you will see my office block in front of you (the room numbering on the 8th floor is not that straightforward).

c.  There is a parking garage on Manning across from the hospital if you need to drive and park.

d.  Please feel free to make an appointment to come and talk with me..

2)  I offer office hours on Mon/Tues from 10-12 or we can schedule meetings prior to class.

Directions: The lineberger building is on West Dr. next door to Mary Ellen Jones and across the street from the Cardinal Parking deck. Take the elevator up to the third floor and proceed to the wing father away from West Dr. This is where the 31-000 rooms are. Take a left and go down the hall way on the right. Room 31-306 will be the third door on your right.

3.  Information on class structure:

A.  A summer class is a very intensive course; we meet every day for two hours. Attendance is required (two days grace-it is up to you to get information from missed days as well as to let me know why you missed).

B.  Textbook: Basic Immunology: Functions and Disorders of the Immune System, 4th edition, Abbas, Lichtman.

C.  We are going to cover most of the book. The purpose of the course is to understand the basics of the immune system.

1)  We will be using the textbook as notes. Literally.

2)  We will be assigning reading from the book as homework.

4.  Assignments:

A.  Poll Everywhere Question (25 points): Each student will post individual answers to questions.

1)  For some questions, students will work in small teams to answer class questions. Points will be assigned on the number of correct answers out of total questions asked.

2)  You will need to have a computer or access to the internet via phone, tablet, etc.

B.  One Peerwise question per chapter (25 points): We will be using Peerwise to write multiple choice questions for each chapter.

1)  They will be due the day after we finish each chapter.

2)  You will have to write a question, explain why the answer is correct AS WELL AS why the other answers are wrong.

3)  Question will be graded on quality, difficulty and feedback of other student’s questions.

C.  Homework Assignment-Structural Throwdown: 20 pts.

1)  Each small group will be randomly assigned a immunological process that you will have to illustrate process of action in class.

2)  Creativity (as well as accuracy and detail) will be rewarded!

3)  There will be a grading rubric given to class for group grading. It should demonstrate all structural features that contribute to the functionality of the process.

4)  The homework will be judged by small groups and a team of experts (AKA graduate students from the Immunology Department).

5.  Quizzes and Final Exam

A.  There will be two in class 30 minute quizzes and one final exam (the University allows 3 hours for the final exam). Each quiz is worth 50 points and the final will be worth 100 points.

6.  The UNC honor code

B.  No cell phones or other electronic devices will be allowed to be used during the quizzes or exams. If you are caught cheating, your exam will be taken and you will receive no credit and be put to the UNC Honor Court.
