Interview: to Caryl Churchill
I: I and my class have worked about your play “a number”.we have found two points of view: some of us think the play is about a father-son relationship.
Others say “ this play is about clonation”. What was your intent when you wrote this play?
Caryl: it’s not relevant. You can read the play and find a lot of points of view, but the important question is “what does this play give me?”. If you think “this play doesn’t give me anything”, don’t read it.
My intent was to speak about clonation, to scream the horrors of this practise.
I: so you are against clonation?
Caryl: the idea of a son, sold for another one, gives me nightmares. I have three children, I know what love is.
I: do you like “a number”? Is it as good as your other plays?
Caryl: of course! Is the work of three years, and I’m delighted it’s being produced in Italy and in Italian. Now I know my work is well considered in all Europe.
I: your style is particular, but why using it on such a dramatic play?
Caryl: it was perfect. It explains the tesion, the doubs, the insecurity of the characters.
I: because insecurity is the sensation you feel when your uniqness is violeted...
Caryl: of course. Uniqness is the only thing we’we got. The world can destroy our family, can take all our things away, but our person, nobody can steal it.
I: so, your are completly against clonation? If we fix some rules, can we improve the studies of the cells?
Caryl: man is a baby. He fixes rules that he doesn’t respect. If now we start with small concessions, give me maximum fifty years, and we will be double. I say: “the Devil is under our skins”. Be warned! We are the victims of ourselves!
I: thanks Ms Churchill...
Caryl: and remember guys, be happy! We exist, and this is the important thing! We are unique, (at least for some years). When you have a problem remember Salter. B1 e B2 and your problems becomes smaller than a minute earlier.
I: thanks Ms Churchill, a final question: what moved you to write this play?
Caryl: I have a problem with my last son. That’s why I reflected about clonation. I read a book: the “aphorisms of clonation” wich opened my eyes. Before I read this book, I tought clonation was a necessary process for science. Now I’m against clonation, because science must be a human tool, not the brain of our society. The empty messages of TV delete all our ideas and make us slaves of the machines. We must rebel. Clonation is not useful to us. It’only a utopia. Dostoevskij in 1840’s wrote “the double” and now clonation is not a real project yet. I think it will never be a real thing.

Io: Io e la mia classe abbiamo lavorato sulla sua produzione “a number” (più di uno). Alcuni di noi pensano che l’opera riguardi la relazione tra padre e figlio. Altri ritengono che tratti la clonazione. Quale era il suo intento quando l’ha scritta?
Caryl: penso non sia importante. Potete leggere l’opera e trovare molti punti di vista, molte domande interessanti, ma l’importante è che vi dovete chiedere “cosa mi lascia quest’opera?”. Se pensate “questa opera non mi lascia niente”, non leggetela. Il mio proposito era di parlare della clonazione di urlare gli orrori di questa pratica.
Io: quindi è contro la clonazione?
Caryl: l’ idea di un figlio venduto per un altro migliore, mi fa venire gli incubi. Ho tre figli, so cosa è l’amore.
Io: le piace “a number”? Lo considera altrettanto valido rispetto alle sue altre produzioni?
Caryl: certo. E’ il lavoro di tre anni e sono molto contenta che sia in scena in Italia ed in italiano. Adesso so che il mio lavoro è apprezzato in tutta Europa.
Io: il suo stile è particolare, ma perché usarlo in una opera così drammatica?
Caryl: è perfetto. Rende la tensione, i dubbi e l’insicurezza dei personaggi.
Io: infatti è insicurezza la sensazione che si prova quando la propria unicità è violata…
Caryl: certo, l’unicità è l’unica cosa che abbiamo. Il mondo può distruggere la nostra famiglia, può prenderci tutto, ma nessuno può rubare la nostra persona.
Io: quindi è totalmente contraria alla clonazione? Se fissassimo delle regole, potremmo avanzare gli studi delle cellule?
Caryl: l’uomo è un bambino. Fissa regole che non rispetta. Se adesso cominciassimo con piccole concessioni, in al massimo cinquanta anni, ci ritroveremo doppi. Io dico: “il diavolo dentro di noi”. Fate attenzione! Siamo le vittime di noi stessi.
Io: grazie Ms. Churchill…
Caryl: e ricordate ragazzi, siate felici! Esistiamo e tanto basta! Siamo unici (ancora per qualche anno). Quando avete un problema, ricordatevi di Salter, B1 e B2 e i vostri guai diventeranno meno spaventosi che un minuto prima.
Io: grazie Ms Churchill, un’ultima domanda: cosa l’ha spinta a scrivere quest’opera?
Caryl: ho avuto un problema con il mio ultimo figlio. E’ per questo che ho riflettuto sulla clonazione. Ho letto un libro: “le aporie della clonazione” che mi ha aperto gli occhi. Prima che leggessi questo libro, pensavo che la clonazione fosse un processo necessario per la scienza. Ora sono contro la clonazione perché la scienza deve essere uno strumento degli uomini e non il cervello della nostra società. I vuoti messaggi della televisione cancellano le nostre idee e ci rendono schiavi delle macchine. Ci dobbiamo ribellare. La clonazione non ci è utile. È solo un’utopia. Dostoevskij nel 1848 scrisse “Il sosia” ma ora la clonazione non è ancora un progetto concreto. Spero non diverrà mai una realtà.

Nice to meet you Mrs Caryl Churchill.I'm a student from liceo Leopardi-Majorana of Pordenone.In class,with our English teacher, I and my friends have read your play "A number", because we had to write a review about this play, that we are going to see in Italian next saturday,at the thatre.
Before seeing it, I'd like to ask you some questions if you don't mind.
Yes, of course you can.The fact that you enjoyed my play really makes me happy, also because I gave to this play a particular importance.
So let's start the interview! Hoh did you choose the theme of the play?
I'll tell you the truth! I was on holiday, in Chicago.I stayed in a luxery hotel, I wanted to enjoy myself and forget my job and my hard daily routine.One night I had a nightmare: a lot of copies of me were trying to kill me! So I thought"Why don't you write a play about clonation ,one of the most interesting themes on these days? And from that I added other themes , like the rapport between father and son, enigmatic like the rapport that I had with my father...You know…So difficult for me!
I understand, what a strange event! And what position would you choose if in the future someone asked you to clone your son and change it?
I will never do that! I think that the single individual must not be clonated because every person is different from the others and couldn't be replaced by another one.
E' un vero piacere incontrarla, signora Churchill.Sono una studente del liceo Leopardi-Majorana di Pordenone. In classe, con la nostra insegnante di inglese, io e i miei compagni abbiamo letto la sua commedia "A number", perché abbiamo dovuto fare una recensione di questa commedia che andremo a vedere il prossimo sabato a teatro, in italiano però.Prima di vedere lo spettacolo, mi farebbe estremamente piacere farle delle domande, sempre se a lei non dispiace.
Certo che puoi. Mi rende davvero difficile il fatto che voi abbiate apprezzato questa mia commedia, alla quale ho dato una particolare importanza.
Ok, non ci resta che incominciare l'intervista a questo punto. Come ha scelto la tematica su cui basare la commedia?
Ti dirò la verità. Ero in vacanza, a Chicago.Alloggiavo in un lussuoso hotel, volevo dimenticarmi del mio lavoro e della mia faticosa daily routine. Una notte ho avuto un incubo davvero singolare: un sacco di mie copie cercavano di uccidermi! Perciò ho pensato"Perché non scrivere una commedia su una tematica di rilievo così attuale?" E da qui ho aggiunto altre tematiche, come il rapporto tra padre e figlio, enigmatico come quello che ho avuto io stessa con mio padre.
Che strano caso! E se in un futuro prossimo ci fosse la possibilità di clonare l'individuo umano, clonerebbe suo figlio, per averne in cambio magari uno migliore?
Non lo farò mai! Credo fermamente che ogni essere umano abbia una sua unicità che lo rende diverso dagli altri e che ogni individuo non possa essere rimpiazzato con un altro.
So instead, why did you choose to write short dialogues and minimal scenografy, composed just by a sofa and a bed?
I didn't want to give the play a collocation in
Time and space and I wrote minimal sentences with meaningful words and fragmentated dialogues because I think that
All of those points let you able to touch the athmosphere.
And now what are you working on?
I am writing another play which is entitled "Don't kill the baby who's in you" This play is really nice and comic but I can't tell you more. Buy the book in january and let me know in your opinion how good it is!

E invece, perché ha scelto di utilizzare dialoghi essenziali e una scenografia minimale?
Non volevo dare alla commedia una collocazione nel tempo e nello spazio; ho utilizzato frasi minimali ma parole significative e dialoghi anche eccessivamente frammentati per rendere l'atmosfera palpabile.
E adesso su cosa sta lavorando?
Sto scrivendo un'altra commedia, intitolata " Non uccidere il bambino che c'è in te", molto carina e comica.Per ora non posso dirti altro. A patire da gennaio però puoi sempre comprare il libro e farmi sapere quanto e se ti è piaciuto!
Senz'altro. Mi piacerebbe davvero andare Avanti con l'intervista ma purtroppo non ne ho la possibilità. Magari le scriverò un' e-mail dopo aver assistito allo spettacolo curato da Walter Malosti per esporle il mio parere. La ringrazio molto e le auguro un buon proseguimento.
