•Drs.MountfordandLanevolunteeredtohelpwithothervettingdutiessincethereisnotalotofCompandCommIandIIactivityatthemoment.GeneralfeelingisthatmanyofthetenAreaExpertsarefeelingoverwhelmedwiththeworkload.

•ArequestwasmadeandwidelysecondedthatallAreaExpertsshouldhaveAdobeProfessionalavailable.RayensagreedtoaskDr.Mullenaboutthefeasibilityofthis.

•TherestillseemtobesomeproblemswiththeCourseApprovalforms.Thereisisolated,butveryreliableevidencethatpartiallycompletedformscanbesometimesbesaved,evenwiththefullAdobeProfessionalsuite,andchangesbelost.LimitedevidenceseemstosuggestproblemcrossesMacandPCplatforms. Dr.LanesuggestedwetalktoJ.R.Jenkinsaboutthisissue.Dr.Lanealsoagreedtohelptroubleshootuntilwecanconfirmthereisaproblemandcanunderstanditbetter.RayensagreedtocontactJenkins.

•IGEOCsuggestedsendingmessagesdirectlytotheDUS’sasawaytoencouragefacultytocarrythroughonpromisedcourseproposals. MembersofthecommitteesuggestedsendingemailsdirectlytotheDUS’saskingforamoredetailaccountingfortheirunits,sothatfacultywhoareaskingquestionsaboutseatsavailableandcoursesplannedcanbegivenaninformedanswer. It

wasalsosuggestedthateitherDr.MullenorDr.RayenstrytoattendtheDUSmeetingintheCollegeofArtsandSciencesonOctober12th.

•GWS200,ENT110,PHY120wereontheconsentagendaandtherewasnorequesttohavethemremoved.SoallthreeweresentforwardtotheUndergraduateCouncilforconsideration.

•Policylanguagedraftedinthelastmeetingwasrevisitedandchangesweresuggested.Proposedlanguagenowreadsasfollows:

1. PolicyLanguage

a. K‐coursesequence–WhenmorethanonecourseissubmittedwiththeintentionthatacertainGeneralEducationareabesatisfiedbythegroup,theInterimGeneralEducationOversightCommitteerecommendedthat:

i. Departmentsberequired,whensubmittingsucharequest,toconstructacomplete

andconcisecurricularmapdetailinghowtheoutcomesofthosekcoursesmaptotheAreaOutcomesoftherespectivetemplate.

ii. Department(perhapsthroughtheirDUS,ifapplicable)beresponsibleformonitoringthecontinuedappropriatenessofthissequencefortheGeneralEducationprogramandforinsuringtheintegrityofthemappingreferredtoabove.

iii. Departmentsberequiredtoofferevidenceeveryfouryearsthatthisintegrityisbeingmaintained.(Committeememberswereslightlyconcernedthatacoursesequencefullywithinamajorwouldbemoresusceptibletodriftifunmonitored.)

iv. Torecommendacceptanceofk‐coursesequencesprovidedthesequencemetthe

appropriateAreatemplaterequirementsasagroupandprovidedthequalitycontrolsuggestedinpartsii.andiii.,above,areinplace.

b. Topicscoursesandcoursesrequiringsubtitles–TheInterimGeneralEducationOversight

Committeerecommended:

i. Departmentsshouldsubmitasinglesyllabusforeachtopicscourse,orcourse

requiringasubtitle. Thissyllabusshouldmakethecaseforhowsubtitledcoursesthatareofferedconsistentwiththeoverallorganizingprincipleforthatcoursecategoryaddressthesamesetoflearningoutcomes,whichcaninturnbemappedtotheAreaoutcomes.

ii. OncetheoverarchinggenericsyllabushasbeenapprovedforGenEd,courseswith

differentsubtitlescanbeofferedasGenEdwithinthatcategoryforaperiodoffouryearswithoutseparatesyllabihavingtobesubmitted.

iii. Thatitbecometheresponsibilityofthesubmittingdepartment’sDirectorofUndergraduateStudiestomonitorthelearningoutcomesforcourseswithvaryingsubtitles,astheyarise,tomakesurethosecoursescanbemappedtotheoutcomesontheapprovedsyllabuswhichwas,inturn,mappedtotheAreaoutcomes.

iv. EveryfouryearssuchdepartmentssubmittotheOfficeofUndergraduateEducationanaccountingofactualcoursesofferedassubtitlesortopicalcoursesundertheapproved,genericsyllabus,withasummaryofthejustificationsforhoweachmappedtotheapprovedsyllabusoutcomes. UponsuccessfulreviewinUEtheapprovedsyllabuswouldbecomeGenEdapprovedforanotherfouryears.Anunsuccessfulreviewwouldleadtotemporarysuspensionoftheapprovalofthecourse(andallsubtitlesandtopics)forGeneralEducationcredit.

c.Enrollmentrestrictions–ThiswasespeciallycontroversialforsomemembersofIGEOCandalengthydiscussionensued.Intheend,theInterimGeneralEducationOversightCommitteerecommended:

i. Thatcoursescouldberestrictedasadepartment’sseesfit(saytomajors)providedtherewasaletterfromtheDeanofthatdepartment’scollegesupportingandjustifyingthatrequest.

ii. Thatnoadditionalresourcesbemadeavailabletodeliversuchcoursesiftheywerepartofthemajor.

iii. ThatperiodicreviewsofthesuchcoursesbemandatoryinordertoinsurethatcoursesthatmayhavebeenrestrictedtomajorsstillmaintainmaximumfidelitytotheGeneralEducationprogramoutcomesandarestillappropriatefortheproposedtemplatearea.

•FinallythedevelopmentofFAQlistwasdiscussedandarequestwasmadeforadditions.Itwasrecommendedthatthedirective“Artifactssubmittedforassessmentpurposesmustbeassignedwithintheclassforcredit.”
