Industrialization/Urbanization Map Project

World History Standard 10.3.3: Students will be able to describe the growth of population, rural to urban migration, and growth of cities associated with the Industrial Revolution.

Phase 1 Instructions.

Break into groups of 2 or 3 and take out one piece of paper to share ideas

and pencils. You must then plan a small city of your own where a 100 people live. Assume all the families are 5 member families meaning you would need 20 homes.

Before adding houses or buildings create the geographic landscape where your city will be established. There must be two rivers running through the landscape.

Now begin building your center of town. Buildings that must be included: City Hall, 2 markets, 1 church, and 1 police station/jail.

Build your 20 homes around the town center.

Phase 2 instructions

Imagine now that abundant natural resources have been discovered on the outskirts of town such as coal fields or the city has become a center for the textile industry. A new population of a 1000 workers has moved into take jobs in the mines or the factories. How will you grow your city to take on such a population?

You must first find room to build at least 3 large factory buildings or 3 large coal mills. You must include a railroad system to take out your products from the factory as well as make use of the rivers for transportation and dumping of waste material.

The working-class population will need to live near the factories or mills. They will need more markets, churches, pubs, jails, etc.

Remember the original families will not want to live in the same area as the new working-class population so be creative how you move things around in your growing city.
