Independent Study Day Friday 18Th March 2015

Independent Study Day
Friday 18th March 2015

The following information is for both students and parents. Over the course of the past week in school the tasks detailed below have been discussed with students and are due for completion during Independent Study Day as follows:

Year 7 and Year 8
Students in Years 7 and 8 will need to complete the following 3 tasks. You should aim to spend approximately 4-5 hours on this work:

  1. Year 7 and Year 8 students are to complete Extended Learning work as set for the lessons missed on Friday 18th March. Teachers will be setting work as appropriate for the lesson missed. This work might be consolidating prior knowledge or preparation for new learning
    to come.
  1. Are you ready to walk, run, swim or cycle yourself proud? Following on from Yellow College day (Sports Relief) Thursday 17th March students will need to consider how they will do their bit for Sports Relief (runs from Friday 18th - Sunday 20th March). They will need to bring evidence of their planned participation for the following week. There is the Marlborough Mile or Swimathon both taking place that Saturday.

Year 9
On Independent Study Day, all Year 9 students will need to read through their Project Planning Guide and work through their Project Planning Workbook. They should conduct some initial research that aims to explore various possibilities and ideas that they could complete their project on. Students will need to select a topic and a form of outcome that interests them and complete the project choices form, which you should sign. Students should then hand in their completed workbook and project choices form to Miss Andrews in G111 no later than Tuesday 22nd March.

For Year 9 students to gain the most from the experience we would be grateful if parents could spend some time with their child reading the Project Planning Guide, discussing their options and helping them choose an appropriate project.

Year 10
Year 10 students will be completing work on Independent Study Day as set by those teachers / subjects whom they would normally have on Friday Week1. Each of these teachers will ensure that work set is the equivalent to one lesson, and the work will be marked and assessed accordingly.
For many Yr.10 students these tasks may well include starting revision of specific topics for their summer exams. In addition, all Year 10 students should / could be completing additional work for their Global Portfolio, building on their experiences in theirrecent mock interviews.

Year 11
All Year 11 students must continue to work on independent revision for their forthcoming exams. Supporting revision materials and skills can be accessed via the intranet; go to:
Saber > St. John’s Curriculum > Revision Skills.

You can also see an overview document “Year 11 Exams – Subject Details” which outlines all the topics you need to revise for each subject. This can be downloaded from the Curriculum Downloads page of the school website; alternatively you can download via the intranet:
Saber > St. John’s Curriculum > Revision Skills.

In addition, we also appreciate that some/many Year 11 students are coming into school on
Independent Study Day in order to complete various Controlled Assessments for different subjects or to participate in revision classes.

Year 12 and Year 13
For Independent Study Day, all Year 12 and Year 13 students will be asked to work on planning their revision programmes and finishing any coursework if necessary. In addition, some subject areas may set specific work.

We have emphasised to students that upon our return to school after the study day, failure to provide (any) evidence of the work/tasks they have completed may affect their chances of participating in future Independent Study Days.

It should also be noted that some students are attending school on this day for specific reasons – and via pre-arrangement - and are, therefore, not expected to complete the tasks above.
