(2) The student applies the proper keyboarding technique to input data when using the computer
(A) The student is expected todemonstrate correct posture and position while conducting data entry
(B)The student is expected to display proper care and operation of equipment used
Basic Direct Teach Lesson
(Includes Special Education Modifications/Accommodations and
one English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) Strategy)
Instructional Objectives / Students will gain understanding and practice in proper keyboarding techniques (sitting, feet placement, hand placement, document placement, etc.) and understand the importance of these techniques.
  • Identify key components in the invention and development of the Typewriter/Keyboard
  • Demonstrate correct posture and position while conducting data entry
  • Display proper care and operation of equipment used
  • Research and identify the importance of proper technique
  • Identify personal technique challenges and/or those in which they excel

Rationale / In Touch System Data Entry, students apply technical skills to address business applications of emerging technologies. Students enhance reading, writing, computing, communication, and reasoning skills and apply them to the business environment. Students will need to apply touch system data entry for production of business documents.

Anticipatory Set
(May include pre-assessment for prior knowledge) / The main purposes of this lesson are to help students understand
  • the history behind touch system data entry (past)
  • the importance of mastering correct techniques (present)
  • proper techniques and their relationship to ergonomics (future)
Ask students if they know the history and purpose behind the invention of the typewriter.
Ask students if they know why it’s important to learn correct keyboarding technique when it comes todocument production and personal fatigue.
Have students do the following as pre-testing and record their individual scores on their own…you can record them, too, as backup.
  • Online Posture & Technique Quiz(10 questions; score at end)
  • Technique and Ergonomics Quiz(10questions; immediate feedback; score at end)

Direct Instruction * /
  1. Vocabulary/Personal Word Wall
  2. Who, What, When, Why, and How? – The History of the Typewriter
  3. Pre-testing(s) Posture and Technique Quiz Technique and Ergonomics Quiz
  4. Ergonomics and the connection between it, proper keyboarding techniques, and the most common typing errors
  5. Video-Proper Keyboarding Technique
  6. Applying and Practicing Proper Technique
  7. Keyboarding and Technique Game
  8. Post-Testing(s) Posture and Technique Quiz Technique and Ergonomics Quiz

Guided Practice * / You and students search the internet to find different sources that explain the following:
  • Ergonomics
  • Common Typing Mistakes
Model for students proper keyboarding techniques and have them follow along with you.
Independent Practice/Laboratory Experience/Differentiated Activities * /
  • Have students individually practice and apply proper techniques.
  • Have students go to the following link, keyboard and technique gameand do the Keyboarding and Technique Game.

Lesson Closure / Have students do the following as post-testing and individually record their scores. Students will compare their pretest scores to their post test scores:
  • Online Posture & Technique Quiz(10 questions; score at end)
  • Technique and Ergonomics Quiz(10questions; immediate feedback; score at end)

Summative / End of Lesson Assessment * / Informal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III):
The following can be used as informal assessments…
  • Check Personal Word Wall Documents
  • Pretesting Participation
  • Post-Testing Participation
  • Keyboard and Technique Game Participation
Formal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III, IV):
The following can be considered a formal evaluation to keep students engaged during both the pre-test(s) s and post-test(s)…
  • Pre-Testing and Post-Testing Personal Evaluation (students track and evaluate their scores)
  • Pre-Testing and Post-Testing Improvement (is there any improvement in the scoring between pre-testing and post-testing)
