The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Today’s Services

The flowers in the Chancel are given by the Lonsinger family in loving memory of Dick Lonsinger, who died January 21, 2015.

The flowers on the altar are given by Keith D. Will, Cheryl Lynn Graunke and Cynthia E. Argyle in loving memory of their parents, Ralph Doll Will and Ethel Gloria Smith Will.

*”When words alone cannot express,” from Worship Song, is our hymn of the month. The text is by John Thornburg, a Presbyterian minister who worshiped with us a few years ago when he lived in West Virginia. He’s now living in Texas. Note that the tune is that of our Doxology, Lasst uns erfreuen.

**Notes about today’s Handbell Anthem: After having heard the tune in Kingsfold, Sussex, England (thus its name), Ralph Vaughan Williams introduced it as a hymn tune inThe English Hymnal(1906) as a setting for Horatius Bonar's "I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say" found in previous UM hymnals but not in the current one, although there are three settings in our hymnal: 179 Sing a song of Bethlehem (Jesus’ life from cradle to cross), 285 To mock your reign O dearest Lord (Fred Pratt Green 1972) and 606 Come let us use the grace divine, a Wesley hymn from 1762. Handbell arranger H. Dean Wagner has created a stunningly beautiful arrangement of this noble tune.

Special music at 10:45 is provided by the Chancel Choir with guest musicians Keith Moorhouse, drums; and Brian Stahurski, bass; and the Chapel Bells, directed by Nancy R. Lutz. Contributions to the Friends of Music Fund enable us to enrich our worship with the addition of guest musicians.

Greeters 8:30 Betsy Harkins 10:45 Bob and Chris James

Worship options for children We encourage children to participate in the Children’s Sermon at both services, and in Kids Praise during the 10:45 service. Nursery services are offered in Room 204 of the Education Building. Ask ushers or greeters and follow signs for direction.

Today’s Scriptures

1 Corinthians 1:10-18

10Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose. 11For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters. 12What I mean is that each of you says, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.” 13Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?

14I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name. 16(I did baptize also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.)

17For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power. 18For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Matthew 4:12-23

12Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. 13He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: 15“Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— 16the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.” 17From that time Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

18As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. 19And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.” 20Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. 22Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him.

23Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people.

Conference Apportionment Paid in Full! Thanks to the wonderful generosity of the congregation, the Apportionment match was accomplished. Before his death, Andy Smith donated $41,000 and challenged the congregation to match that amount. By January 8, enough funds were received to equal the match. This means our church raised enough funds in 2016 to pay our full asking of $97,000 from the Western Pennsylvania Conference. Our contribution supports the Conference mission projects, including flood relief in the Connellsville area, as well as many more projects throughout the world. In addition, the generous offerings in early January have made it possible to send a check to the Conference to pay an installment for our January apportionment bill. Our hope is to stay current in 2017 with our apportionment asking. Finally, all required bills were paid for the 2016 fiscal year which ensured full funding for our church’s ministries. God is truly blessing us as we continue to build His kingdom.

Become a Greeter: Extend a Welcome Hand

The Sunday morning greeter is often the first person a visitor or member contacts on entering the church. A greeter’s smile, handshake and cheerful words may set the tone for not only a church goer’s worship experience, but also an entire day. MLUMC is in need of Sunday morning greeters. Consider serving at one of the two worship services. You’ll become a vital part of the church’s ministry of hospitality and make new friends. If you can offer this service once or twice a year, fill out the form below and drop it in the collection basket or deliver it to the office.
